Dasher powders

It is not that I don't like long free bores . It's the fact that you need to start at the least best f.b. to start the erosion process . I think my customers should be able to shoot great score's right out of the lathe and burn into the sweat spot for perfect barrel life. The dasher is one that will kick but all the way down to the end. But you do not want to leave barrel life in the chip bin of your lathe. Thanks Dave Kiff

Don`t cut the .160" FB short. 2.138" agg for 8 targets 2012 St Louis IBS Nats.
They all shoot well, just a preference. I now have a lathe and a throater so I can use my .104" FB reamer and lengthen it to suit my needs. Tim

I started out with Varget in my 1st Dasher in 2004, then moved to Viht N150. Got a little more velocity & cleaner burning with N150, but accuracy at 600 was really excellent with both. I found myself using about a half-grain more of N150 than Varget; was running 3060-3070fps out of 30" Krieger .236"/1:8. Latest jug of N150 is faster - I've had to back off a half grain to avoid ejector swipes in my BAT 3L, even though the latest bbl. is a .237" vs. the old .236".

I sent my Dasher reamer back to PTG to have the freeebore shortened from .158" to .123", and chambered a 30" std Palma Bartlein 5R .237"/1:8 for the BAT 3L prone rifle. Not sure what's going on, but so far, I've not found a load with 105 Hybrids, VLDs, nor Lapua 105s that will shoot under 1/2 MOA at 600 with either Varget or N150. Haven't had a lot of time to focus on this rifle, as I'm working with several others at the same time I'm doing fall planting & trying to get ready for corn harvest, so don't take this post as a knock on Bartlein, Berger, or PTG.

I'm about ready to put an older Krieger back on this action, but will try more different seating depths & maybe even give RL15 a shot first. Just slightly frustrated, as I've had such good results over the past eight years with N150 in various Dashers, including another BAT 3L LR BR rifle that's currently shooting quite well with the same lot of N150 that I'm using (or trying to) in the prone BAT.

N150 is 1 powder I have totally overlooked in my testing. I saw a very talented competitor at the Nats was using it. He shot extremely well

What kind of erosion are you guys seeing? I have two dashers cut with .104 f.b. One is at aout 700 the other about 1000 rounds, niether throat has moved, not even a thou.

Some of the softer steels or button style rifling may move quicker than cut rifled. I only use cut now and my erosion is moving very little. The 1000 yd events have to shoot sighters and then 10 shot groups and that is 1 reason I don`t shoot at those events. I would bet those barrels would erode much quicker. F-Class as well 20 shots 20 minutes, tough on equipment. Still a ton of fun!!! ;D

Not trying to discourage anyone, just why I play the games I play. I have shot 1000 yd events so I actually have a basis for my opinion. I also have shot F-Class, and is why I have a basis for my opinion.

Good Shooting yourself

How do you measure your dummy round from the lands and determine your freebore?

My chamber was done with the SAAMI 6BR. What would the freebore be?

I would seat a bullet just touching the lands and send it to Dave Kiff for measurement. I bet a nominal fee and shipping back is all it would be. He has an optical comparitor that gets it right. If I send in a dummy round my reamer comes back almost exactly as the sent case.

All the measuring in the world doesn't make up the .040" difference in lot numbers.....

Dennis, Your freebore length is perfect . Most all the dummy rounds that have been comming in as of late have been from .112 to .128 . That has changed from the old days of .104 up . Alot of the folks that jumped from .104 out to .160 have also changed back to the .120s range. Thanks Dave.

Dave,

When I called you regarding my reamer you had me go with .098 and honestly I've been struggling to get this to shoot. Tried every combo I can think up or have read on this forum. Makes me wonder if the .098fb has yet to burn into a sweet spot?? My barrel is a Krieger 1-8 .236 at 30" nothing out of the ordinary.

I have a lot of customers order the .060 and .098 free bore's and I do recommend .098 in some case's for a certain bullet or a bullet combination . If it does not shoot well out of the lathe then I would start looking into the resone why because the Dasher has always been a forgiving cartridge for me . I have seen .098 fb shoot 105 and 107 well for a few of my customers . The great thing about throaters is you can lengthan your free bore to any desired length if needed. You mite try throating it out if you have looked at every thing else. Thanks Dave

Thanks Dave my new reamer has .133 fb.i shoot 6mm Dasher
Berger 105 Hybrid .012 off
Wolf ncsrm primers
H4350 36.8 Gr
30'' 7 1/2 Krieger
Got second place in Florida 1000 yd Gong shoot no real testing Sub 1/4 Out of the box
Good Shooting
Larry

I've been using N550, a starting point would be around 34grains, it will hold F-class x ring out to 1100 yds ( I'm going for the big 1200yds soon). I have 850 rounds down the barrel and have got 10 thou of barrel wear.
