Dasher/Brake/Fluting

Some of the best 1k guys I know shoot a dasher. I guess I never realy looked over thier equipment. I May be putting together another (better) Dasher for dedicated 1K BR. My question is is it worth it to flute the bbl and install a brake. I know from my current dasher that they don't kick much or build a lot of heat ( I shoot 300 wby in comp)......BUT.......I can't help but think that, as far as recoil is concerned, the less recoil, the better. I figure the gun could also be used for HG (less the brake), which could bring the heating issue into play.

Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I'd skip the flutes and put the money in the barrel fund, unless you need it to make weight.

While I've ran brakes on 6.4-284's, I prefer to not put them on my Dashers. I've never heard of a brake making a gun more accurate, but I do know of several that shot better without the brake installed.
 
On my DASHER I did the flutes mainly for the looks and any benefits that would come along with that. The BRAKE is imparative for me. I really dislike recoil. The main reason; I want to see where the bullet hits.
Some people complain about the extra noise from a brake, but, since everyone on the line should be wearing hearing protection; I don't see the problem.
 
I have 2 Dashers and both have brakes on them and neither is fluted. One is for varmints but my wife’s is for targets, it has a 30’’ 8 twist Kreager # 17 and weighs right at 17 lbs. I love shooting clays at 400 and being able to watch them shatter and fall. ;D

Aside from reducing recoil, hanging a break off of the end of a BBL is like adding a non adjustible tuner. In my opinion (as little as it is worth) you must find a different load with and without a "tuner" (break). I agree totaly that some guns have shot better w/o the break installed. My 300 two years ago is a perfect example. It seemed like my year long HG groups were the same size as my LG (with break), so I decided to shoot the last match of the year w/o the break in both classes. Probably the only time I ever beat you in a relay!!!!I have never done any experamenting, but I would think that the ideal loads with and w/o the break would be very close.

As far as recoil...I am used to it.....Kinda like it actualy ;D....but we all know how critical gun handling is in 1K. I have muscled my guns with some success. I would like to try the other end of the spectrum once!! Try and smooth and fast for a change.

I know you have had a million dashers....you have never tried a break on one, or did try one and didn't like it?

Never tried a Dasher brake. Don't like the blast or the expense. I'm not a car salesmen fer crying out loud. ;D ;D ;D

I'm not sure the brakes on a 1K tapered barrel are enough to be considered for a "tuner". My 6.5 Vais weighs under 2 1/2 ounces. Weight wise, you think that'll tame down your 300? ;D

I think some shooters knowingly or unknowingly use brakes as weapons against other benchrest shooters. I mean it is really distracting for me to be next to a guy who is shooting a brake sometimes, I have had to time my shots so I don't get rattled by the guys brake next to me. If you can rattle the nerves of the shooters on both sides of you, you have a better chance of shooting the better score/group. Non braked guns I hardly ever notice, I plug and ear muff.

Sorry.....you could be right. My responce......OH WELL....DEM DA BREAKS!!!! No pun intended. ;D

Seriously......this is a subject that I will not even consider when considerig weather or not to break a gun. Breaks are legal in LG, and that is that. If you don't like breaks, shoot in HG class only, or try F class.

I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but it is how I feel. Sorry.

Fantastic idea! I will continue shooting my F-Class and when ya'll benchrest shooters run out of people to compete with make sure you unscrew your brakes, and come and join us. ???

Sorry Flybuster. I don't think you took my post in the spirit it was intended. Like I said, I don't want to ruffle any feathers. Especaly since I am new here.

By the way, I do shoot some informal f class....truly a wonderfull discipline. And it is a 200 mile weekend as opposed to a 1000 to 1500 mile weekend for BR.
