Advice on buying a 6 Dasher BBL

I have seen good barrels in most brands. I have had good Broughtons and Krieger's. I have also seen bad ones. Krieger does seem to get a lot of good ones. They seem to be consistent. Matt

Matt, At Williamsport WO. look at the numbers of makes used and the ones that win. A couple of years ago Mike Wilson Shot the only Douglas in Heavy and won and it was a 300 WSM. Sheer numbers entered, the chance of them doing good is way better than the lone barrel or a few……. the big thing is who is using them……. jim

Jim you are right about numbers, but I am judging it on a whole season and the groups and clusters they shoot. They just seem to put out a lot of good barrels. You are also right about who has the barrel. Some guys just make them shoot better. I also saw a lot of good Bartliens. Sometimes I see where a certain company makes a good barrel in a certain caliber. For example maybe Krieger makes a good 30 and Bartlien or Broughton makes a good 6MM. Matt

Matt, i have followed it since short range but it seems to go in cycles, one will be on top for a while then the next one seems to produce great barrels. There is no sure bet thats for sure…… jim

I'll never own another 5R barrel...Kreiger or Bartlien...I've had a couple that shoot very well, but they have always pressured up faster, and been twice as had to clean...for me, I'm only running 4 grove Kreigers in my 6mm and 7mm.....237 on my 6mm...

My current 4-groove 237 1:8 twist Kreiger Dasher barrel is the best barrel I've ever owned...it holds a couple records now and lots of wins..I'll be hard pressed to shoot anything but Kreigers right now..Best part is most of the time Brunos has them is stock, ready to ship...no a plug for Brunos of any kind BTW..its just nice to be able buy a barrel on demand..

My first hummer barrel was from Sinclair, and sent back to Kreiger for tool marks on the lands. it lasted 1500 rds…….. and it was a PPC. burning the pull down 8208. ….. jim

If you want a Bartlein that will impress, order a .236" 4 groove. You may want to go through Brian, as Frank did not want to make this barrel for me at all. I got many e-mails explaining why I didn`t want one, mainly because thats not what he uses. But I`m hard headed. Brian and I were speaking and I asked what was up with Frank not wanting to make this barrel, he went back over the e-mails, and reminded Frank some bullet maker had ordered one and was tickled.

I told savageguy of this incident and he ordered several .236" Bartlein 4 groove and the records waterdog is speaking of was from one of those barrels, told me by Chris. They outshoot the .237" 5R, from my example of 1, and do not copper foul as bad.

Just my humble opinion.

Tim, To clear this up a little bit. Why I don't use .236" bore barrels and I did primarily when I was at Krieger but don't anymore is due to bullet failure. The tighter bore (taller/deeper lands) will cut into the bullet jacket more. This can create more of a stress point the bullets jacket and or cut thru the thickness of the jacket which will lead to bullet failure. I've had it happen to two or three different barrels. I was actually able to trace the problem back to the lot of bullets as being the main part of the problem. With that being said though I don't feel a .236" bore gives you anything extra in terms of barrel life and or accuracy.

If a guy insists on a .236" bore I would prefer they go with the 5R rifling then. Will make them in 4 groove if that's what you really want but that is my reasoning behind it.

I tested both a .236" bore 4 groove Krieger and a .237" bore 5R barrel we made here back in 2006. Both barrels got chambered with the same 6mm Rem. reamer and I ran the same loads thru them. Shot a two man team match at a 1k yards with them. There was no difference in accuracy etc...and we took 3rd place.

I hope that explains it better.

I understand completely, running a 6mm Remington would be a concern for bullet integrity. Our benchrest game is played lower and slower 99 percent of the time, maybe is why I have never in my life had a bullet fail to reach the target. You guys make great barrels, and for the benchrest crowd, 600 and 1000, the .236" 4 groove would be my flagship offering.

The best dasher barrels are Kreiger 237 bore 1 in 8 twist 4 grooves cut 28". I am sure they hold more long range records than any other.

You sure about that?

Bartlein Barrels

P.S. I'm doing a 6 Dasher right now. 4 groove, .237" bore and 1-7.75 twist.

Frank,

I'd certainly take a chance on a Bartlein for my Dasher! I've done plenty of winning with them in 100/200 yard Benchrest! I also watched Johnny Tijoe at the last match I was at shoot two small 1.4s and then a big 1.3 at 600 yards. Paul Whitt at the same range has done some amazing shooting with his bartlein! Both were shooting my 105 grain Infinity Boattails. Maybe that has something to do with it!

You're funny! The old, "If he's so good bring him out here!" I'd love for him to! If I can get him to one I will. He shoots a good bit of short range Benchrest as well as mid-range. Why don't you come shoot with the boys in S.E Ohio at the Golden 600 yard range this next year? Great bunch of guys and some fairly high level Long range shooters! I believe there are a few IBS National title holders. The most recent I can think of is Reese Cremeans. He is your 2015 1000 yard IBS HG Score Champion. So just because it's a club match don't think there aren't good shooters there. Ive seen the highest level of competition that the IBS has to offer. That includes short, mid, and long range Nationals. I can tell you right now Paul would do very well at IBS 600 yard matches.

Bart the reason I don't shoot with those boys us because they don't hardlyshoot any of our inibs matches only if it is a state shoot or something.

Stan,

Well that's unfortunate! Where are your matches? I'm just figuring out where all the ranges are. Is it White Horse? It's not too bad of a drive only a little over 400 miles, but I don't see any matches scheduled for next year yet. I do see some 1000 yard matches at Harry Jones on the IBS Schedule. I'd love to come over and shoot with you boys!

Bart

Yes they wait an see other schedules so they don't get up against other clubs we would love to have you an dusty I will let you know when the get it up looking forward to shooting with you maybe I'll learn something. Stan

Stan,

I'm the one in the learning mode but I'm starting to figure it out! So far I've built 2 long range rifles with 2 more in the works. Now I just need to learn to shoot!
