6 Dasher vs 6.5+284

I couldn’t have said it any better than Ledd Slinger or INTJ so I won’t add to it, also 6br1k is correct if your not experienced in wildcatting the 6Bra is much easier to form brass. A standard 6br is a nice way to go as well for a 600 yard rifle and if it’s not really windy they are good at 1k . There’s nothing wrong with a 6.5*284 I’ve had a couple of them if your shooting f class they do pretty well or if your shooting steel they do well but if your trying to shoot br you won’t be able to outperform any of the 6br variants. I would like to know about your 2” 800 yard group?… was that a 5 shot or 10 shot group?… and will it repeat it often?…. In my experience with that chambering it will not,… that’s holding 1/4 minute accuracy. not saying yours won’t but mine would not.

Why wouldn’t your 65-284 shoot. Bad barrel ? Did you try 140 hybrids / or 153.5 hybrids
Mine shoots bug holes with 51.5 / 52 / 52.4. H4831sc 20 jump or kissing With both , even 140 ELDM. Second barrel even. I shot Mostly 153 ATIPS in the first barrel.

I guess it depends on what your interpretation of a bug hole is?…. Mine would be in the .1’s or less and no the 6.5*284 wasn’t capable of that for me. I shot a stiff charge of H4831 sc Lapua Brass federal 210M primers and 139 Lapuas and or 142 Berger’s
At 100 yards it would shoot in the .2’s-.3’s but at a 1000 yards 1/2 minute was rare 3/4 minute was the norm. Which was plenty good enough for Fclass at the time or steel matches but 1000 yard br no!… I went with a 6*284 then a 6xc and ended up with Dashers and 6brx’s. If I was in Williamsport I would more than likely go with a 7 saum or variant or maybe a .300 Saum or variant but in Montana the 6br variants rule the 1k br world

Are you measuring outer to outer then subtracting 264?

That’s good shooting for that cartridge I’m happy for ya!…. I’ve always liked the rebated .284 case and wouldn’t be without at least something based off it. At present I have a 6*284 6.5*284 and a .284
Does your rifle repeat that target after target relay after relay or just a wallet target?
Wayne

Why?…. Unless your using a smooth bore sized at .256
Wayne
I figure that bullets get squeezed down a bit to fit the bore diameter so the size of the bullet holes on paper are a bit smaller than the actual bullet diameter. For me, I just use bore diameter - easier to remember (.237, .256, .300)

For 6mm, I was told that it's easier to use a 22 caliber scribed hole on the measuring tool cause it fits right over a 6mm bullet hole better than a 6mm scribed hole. Seems that a 6mm bullet hole on paper is closer to .22x in actual diameter.

When I measure the bullet holes on paper, 6mm measures more like .227 and .308 measures more like .290 - at least that's what I generally get (rough measuring):

I've seen other posts on AS where they subtracted a smaller number than the diameter of the bullet. Here is an example where shooter is subtracting .290 for a .308 bullet.

Nothing wrong with subtracting the bullet diameter - that definitely is the easiest number to remember (easier than the funky numbers I posted above).

No I hang targets in my reloading room I can’t believe the rifle shoots as good as it does without turning necks. All I do is Anneal brass after every firing and Full length size bump shoulder back 2
My 76 year old mother lives nearby and I have to tell her when I am shooting I have 100 yard range right out my front door I show her the target every time for the past year she really don’t understand but she says why do you keep doing that I said what do you mean, If you know it will shoot in the same hole why continue to do it.
She said why don’t you just put the rifle up. I told her I am….lol

We are completely different kind of shooters you are probably a pro I have no interest in competing can’t afford it for one , plus it’s a family thing like I mentioned before I have family that comes up from Tennessee once a year and if a 16-year-old girl that shoots once a year can hit a 6 inch steel target at 1005 yards it’s time to put the rifle up. Roughly 480 rounds through rifle so maybe 800 more then it will be toast but I don’t know I don’t shoot 20 shot strings so we will see.
I shooting my Creedmoors now And Compass Lake engineering AR

The gods have blessed me with three rifles actually.

I have the money just can’t decide what caliber. Seriously thinking 7 mm

Ledd Slinger,
Funny you posted this, many moons ago I bought an attachment for my vernier calipers that had I believe 3 or 4 holes in the attachment maybe 22-6-7 and 30 cal which automatically deducted the bullet so you just measured outside holes for group size it worked fine but soon the novelty wore off and I benched it. I took a break from serious shooting from 16-20 it’s amazing how much you can forget in 4 years!…. As I was getting back into it was going through things and absolutely had no clue what it was for?…. Couldn’t find one online then one night viewing a thread on group size it hit me what the tool was for haha anyway you post brought back a memory. If Neil makes it I’m sure it’s a great tool

Not trying to be smart, and not sure how far Caldwell Ohio is from Williamsport Pennsylvania but you should come and shoot at the world open this year, early July, and see how well you could do against the 6 Dashers and BRA’s .A lot of incredibly nice prizes to make it worth your while.A good 6.5x284 can and has won but man the 6’s are tuff little critters!
Williamsport Pa is just a small little 1000yd Benchrest club. QUOTE.

The 6.5-.284 is an outstanding round. John Hoover and his entire family kick butt with it. They have for 30ish years. The 6.5/47 is also one to be considered. They are both fantastic at 1000yds. Lapua makes fantastic brass for both. I will not be surprised that a 6.5 doesn’t take the 10 shot agg. this year at Williamsport.

ell how about 10 shot group at 800 yards that measures 3.434” not - .264 Measured outside to outside.
One shot per minute roughly Harris bipod rear protector bag. Is that any good ?Especially with Harris bipod and rear bag. I think it is excellent.
