Daddy Gonna be Needing a new Chronograph

The Honesty on this thread is overwhelming. Been there, done that, somebody ought to sell T-Shirts.

It's guys like us that keep them in business. After I shot my first one, (curtain legs) I bought several sets of rods as spares.

Well after over 20 years of use, I finally did it. The old Chrony is dead.

I will be needing a new one. Any suggestions? And I don't want that thing that attaches to the barrel, and I probably will not spend as much as new barrel, as I would probably shoot that one too. Just as good chronograph similar to this one.

my first one was a oehler 33 so i only ever shot the metal supports on the sky screens that hold the reflector up. got a labradar now and id recommend it

Have owned and tested many different chronographs in my life. Had as many as 7 setup inline testing at once. All in all, have to say the Shooting Chrony brand chronographs are a pretty darn good - IME, as long as one excepts the fact that they will not repeat to well from one lighting scenario to another. And that the changing "sun angles" and lighting has effects on all optical lens sensor type chronographs through out a day, and day to day.

Infrared sky screens, can greatly help there accuracy, consistency and repeatability, as well as can "false lighting". The better one controls and/or equalizes the lighting to the screens, the better they will perform.

In my own conclusions: if one is wanting the latest and greatest, LabRadar is what I recommend. But if latest and greatest isn't important, a good setup with lighting aspects controlled, will make chronographs like the Shooting Chrony perform very well - IME

Yeah, I just done this as well with a pellet rifle. Its a springer with a fixed barrel with a under lever cocking rod. Loaded a pellet thought i had the cocking lever latched but didn't, it was hanging down part way and when i fired the rifle the force of the lever closing pulled the barrel down and bingo no chrony:confused::mad:

as much as i do not like the new bbl mounted chrono. it can be mounted on a rod, next to the bbl
attached to the bench or some stable mass. you can do the same with labradar( they sell a mic)
hmmmm - he managed to not hit a 3" gap at a few paces... what are the chances of getting the bullet to pass the bayonet at 1/3"? affixed to the stock somehow, now that might be safe. just kidding... apologies (and condolences) to urbanrifleman

I saw my buddy try to shoot a saboted slug through one. Not good. Also saw a guy shoot a 5 shot group of 22rf at 50 yards through one and wonder why there was no group on the paper......

dmoran you are quite correct about the Chronny being very good with light control. I have 2 and use them under light shade no direct sun into or onto the Chronny.

The labradar has rendered all other chronographs obsolete as witnessed by all the offers of free or discounted ones. The magnetospeed even got its short life cut short when the labradar came along.

True enough. I haven't made the jump to the Labradar yet. I'very got a V3 Magnetospeed that I'm happy enough with.

Shooting Chronys is like gear up landings. There are those that have and those that will.:D

And I rendered mine scrap metal with a crossbow.

I ruined my chrony, but I didn't even get the satisfaction of putting a hole in it. I tripped on the printer cord and tipped it over. When it fell it smashed the printer plug into the plastic case and broke it.

correct but the diffuser's are annoying & almost useless also,i just hang a small tarp or something similar to shade the chrono//much better readings ime

My Magnetospeed V3 bayonet has a small round groove on the top side about a quarter bullet deep right near the tip, just off to the side a little. Somebody must have borrowed it and returned it like that since I don’t make mistakes. They didn’t break it though, it still works fine.
