Chronograph Blog

Pauls experience in the Chronograph Blog is interesting in the fact that no two chronographs will register the same, but I wouldn't go trashing your shooting Chrony just yet though.
I won't get into the argument of which chronograph is best, or the screen spacing controversy, or those that insists you need two sets of screens at different yardages, etc. etc. etc. there are proponents of each, and to each his own.

I use a chronograph strictly as a tool to develop a working load. If my chrony tells me I'm averageing 2970 fps with a E.S. of 7 fps, and a S.D. of ? and that load is grouping in one ragged hole, then I'm happy and that's it for the chronographing. Aside from occasionly going back just to make sure everythings staying the same. I don't get obsessed with numbers, or shoot over the chronograph everytime I go to the range like some. Again to each his own. If my 2970 fps load over my chrony would read 2920 over someone elses Oehler I wouldn't be upset if the ES and SD were still low and it was still shooting bugholes, because it's just a number. The only real numbers that matter are my scores shot in competition. That paper target at 500 meters dosen't know if the bullet that just went through the ten ring was clocking 2970 or 2920. A ten is a ten and that's it.
Would I buy an Oehler 35? Me, no, I don't use a chronograph that much to warrent the expense, so my Chrony Beta Master works just fine for me.
Again to each his own.

Thanks Paul, for making that interesting observation though, it would be interesting to set up three or four identical chronographs side by side with the same rifle ammunition etc. just to see how much different three Oehler 35's were. I'd bet the results wouldn't be much different than comparing three or four identical Chrony's.
