I had one in .223. It was an honest 3/4 to 1 inch gun. But, as some have mentioned here, it cycled rough and you had to pay attention to get it to feed into the barrel. Although the box magazine looks "cool", in reality it made the gun clunky to carry because the magazine was right where my hand wanted to be. It was a nice looking rifle for sure. I loaned it to a young man I worked with because he kept wounding and tracking deer with a .270. I asked him if he wanted me to fix that for him and handed him the .223 and I said, try this, but you have to be patient and place your shot in the right place. After three dead deer that fell in their tracks, he begged me to sell it, and I did.

Bottom line? I have a 222 model 600 Mohawk. When I get the money saved up, I'm going to get a good 20"222 barrel put on it, bed it, and call it done.

CZ 527 mags have sharp feed lips. It helps to run a file or dowel with sand paper to break/relieve the inside sharp edge on feed lips. This will smooth out the feeding. Also, if you have some steel cases for said cartridge then make up some dummy rounds to cycle through rifle while watching TV.

There are “flush fit” 3rd magazines out there. There is a DIY to convert a 5-round magazine into a flush fit. Also, James Calhoun sold the / converted mags at one point in time (as I recall).

Another answer is a single shot block. Several different people offered this. I bought mine from Mr. Calhoun.

I don't know understand the hoopla over 527's, maybe the Hornet but I ld rather spend less money on a small Sako and a lot less money on a Howa Mini.

Agreed. I'd actually spend more for the small Sako.....
As others mentioned - kind of like a Ford VS Chevy deal, but I own both and like both a lot.

I have a fondness for the mini’s and own a few different makes/models. Having bought both factory new CZ 527’s and used rifles (post-discontinue), I understand the discontent with current market prices for these rifles. Some things to consider:

Sako L46/L461 is a splendid little rifle. Not everyone is interested in tracking down a vintage rifle to re-barrel to a newer cartridge ($600-$800). Another consideration is potential cost to source any parts (firing pin, extractor claw, magazine, dovetail scope rings, etc.). For the most part the only option are factory parts with vintage scope rings at $150 and L46 magazine at +$200. Depending on where you hunt the petite factory wood stock and vintage blued steel may not hold up to environmental factors and shooting style.

Howa Mini is a decent substitute for the CZ 527, but you will need a better stock than the factory crap Tupperware ($200-$400), upgrade the trigger ($200), and upgrade plastic bottom metal to one that is actually metal ($125). Also, if have a feeding issue then it is upgrading to aftermarket internal box mag with hinged floor plate ($200) or bottom metal conversion kit that uses CZ 527 metal magazines ($250 including 1 magazine).

The CZ 527 comes from factory with everything you want in a modern production. It’s just a bit frustrating trying to understanding why CZ decided to discontinue this rifle. It was just a few years ago (pre-discontinued) when you could by a factory new CZ 527 for +-$600, which makes the current market pricing seem outrageous. However, when you consider cost of either re-barreling a Sako or upgrading Howa Mini then the current price of CZ 527 is reasonable.

I really wish Howa would be responsive to customer recommendations for improvements to their rifles and incorporate improvements at the factory instead of forcing the consumer to upgrade/retrofit their rifles straight out of the box. My 2 cents…

Oso, in case you're not aware, Leupold offers excellent Sako dovetail rings. Both my L461 Vixens wear them.
