CZ 457 MTR ACTION SCREWS

I was at the range yesterday and did a little research on torque settings for my CZ 457 MTR action screws with Wolf Match Target ammo at 50 yards.
I started out at 17 i/p and worked up to 25 i/p at 2 i/p increments.
I found 23 i/p held a nice group and the 25 i/p started to open up a little. When I set the screws at 24 i/p, it was the best group yet.

I am not a gunsmith, but seems to me if your torque settings are that sensitive then there is a bedding issue with the rifle.
I’d be more inclined to take it seriously if I saw multiple groups at each setting. With a known ammunition that will consistently group tightly.
Then come back to the setting and repeat, tighten/loosen and repeat.

I play with the torque settings on all my rifles, Some it really improves, some it doesn't seem to matter, I just figured everybody looking for accuracy did this...
I agree. I’m just saying that it takes more than a group or two and has to be repeated in my opinion. And maybe he did that, can’t say.

The op's experience is pretty common with wood stocked rimfire rifles. I own quite a few and optimal torque settings is between 22 and 30 inch-pounds. As mentioned, some rifles show little or no improvement, but others show a lot! Shimming the free floated barrel can also make an improvement in some but not all rimfire rifles.

MTR Torque experiments are on the list for my next range session Fri. I had to wait till I received my new machined action screws, the OEM ones were junk. Going to start at 15 and work to 30 in 5lb increments to narrow down a range then go with smaller increments.
