action ?

Gentlemen,
Let me first say i'm new to the idea of br shooting. I don't want to start a war over this but it's a ?.
if a good smith "i.e. gre-tan" reworked a rem 700 action. Wouldn't it be the same as a custom action? Looking to have a 223 built for varmints. Wondering if a custom action would be a better route then rem 700? TIA

PJ,
What type of br shooting are you going to do? Most point blank,100&200yds) shooters, both score and group use customs actions exclusively, At the Super Shoot this year, I did not see a single 700 action on the line.

At the F-Class Nationals,600&1000yds) this year, I shot beside Jeff Cochran who won the match. Jeff was shooting a tricked out 700. I don't know how much money Jeff spent on that rig, but I will bet if all the cost were put down on paper, it would be very, very close to the cost of a custom action. Cochran is a hammer, he would won that match even if he was throwing knives.

Most tactical competitors shoot a 700 derivative. There are many aftermarket parts avaloiable for the 700.

Before you spend the money on a 700, I want you give Bob White a call 973.663.5159. Bob is a gun dealer that has a huge supply of used custom rigs for sale. Might be able to get a Panda or similar action cheap. Bob is a good guy, really knows his stuff.

Everyone goes through this same mental exercise that you are going through.

Good luck, keep us posted on your project, welcome to 6BR.com

CHUCK,
Right now i'm looking at building a varmint rig. On a 700 .223.Maybe a stiller predator action. Don't know yet. Next i already have a rem 700 .308. I'm thinking of building a 6mmbr for 600 and 1000 comp. I'm thinking if you properly blueprint an action it should be up to br standards. When i build both rigs i want them both be as accurate as possible. Is the reason few if anyone use rem 700 is the customs offer more options to the shooter? In a custom you have rb,lp and drop ports, non eject, and on and on.

PJ,
A 700 will make a fine live varmint rig or a great competition rig for that matter. Jerry Stiller makes some of the very best actions out there there, you can't go wrong with him. I do not know anyone that is shooting one of the new Surgeon actions, but they sure do look nice. I am going to have to have one.
What part of the country do you live in? You should choose a first class smith to do the work on your gun.
Keep us posted on your progress!!!!

Chuck,
I live in southern california.I agree the surgeon action looks good. The reason i'm looking at the predator is it doesn't cost that much more the what gre-tan charges for working on the rem 700. The only smiths i've heard of are listed on benchrest.com and here. Trying to find a smith to do the work is hard not knowing who's good and who's not.

PJ,
I hope you buy the Predator, Jerry Stiller is a great guy, really has his act together. Jerry used to build some great guns, I don't know if he is still doing it or not, they stay busy making actions.

Sometimes reworking a M700 can be like putting a $5000.00 set of wheels and tires on a Ford Pinto. In the end you still have a Ford Pinto and a Remington 700.

Give Stiller a call 922.0429.5000
