Custom actions vs. Savage actions ;D

I believe what I bought is the standard Jewell BR trigger - no bolt stop or safety. So I guess it will be 1.5 oz, in which case I have no reason to make any adjustments.

Correct.

And if I understand you correctly, Erik - even the Jewell triggers will slam fire if not properly adjusted. That makes them have one thing in common with the Savage trigger IF the blade is removed from the Savage trigger. ;D

If ss86 can compete with the trigger the way it is and he is used to it, why should he set it to 1.5 oz?
Just because someone said so?

Bill, my point was that just about any trigger out there is reliable at a heavy setting. It's when you get down to "competition" levels that the Savage triggers fall short.

Unless you get the SSS Evolution, it is very good. The biggest drawback is you have to send your action to SSS.

Yeah, I've heard those are pretty good, they only slam fire every few months.

Shot mine in br for a season and never had one.

As to the Evolution trigger, a guy that I shoot with had Fred build him a complete rifle on a target action with this trigger and it has been a problem since he took delivery. Slam fired, he talked to Fred and Fred told him what to do to fix it and it worked for awhile then it would slam fire. When I say slam fire, what I really mean is that while he was gently closing the bolt it went off. He had it fixed for a little bit then it would do it. It wasn't very confidence inspiring for him. Glad yours worked Nick, but not all of them do.

I am just waiting for the day some guy showes up at a major match shooting a custom chambered ar 15! In a Bolt gun event! The day will come and oh the Pissin match will be a hoot. Or Perhaps a guy like David Tubbs has already done this? Bottom line we all stick together as gun owners and second amedment rights individuals. At the end of the day its what matters most. Love what ya shoot and respect others the same freedom!
Im a hunter, do I need a custom built bolt action. No, would i like one maybe if trigger was 2 pounds or a bit better. In my OPinion! thats low limit for safe hunting? Dont care what you think its my opinion! I do not own a Savage not that I wouldnt. I love my Remingtons, ARs and even a Mauser I rebarreled. OH and forgot, with all due respect Brownings! IF you dont love Brownings you dont care for much as so many are patent copys! Stop argueing about your favorite guns and use that energy to right a anti gun legislater in your state and tell them how you feel. This will benifit all gun owners in the future. Folks our fight isnt over! Think about it.! Chnging a opinion of a died and wool Savage owner! Peeing in the wind! Fight together!

This year the IBS has 95 scheduled short-range (100 -300 yd) Varmint-For-Score matches where factory class is included in the contest. There is also several tournaments (States) that also include factory class. Yet, very few take advantage of this opportunity to see how they stack up against trued factory and custom actions under like conditions. If your factory or enhanced factory meet the weight limits of 10-1/2 # for LV, and 13-1/2 # for HV you can register in these 2 classes. You load, shoot and clean alongside all the classes, and new shooters are always welcome.

BTDT....for a period of 2 years the IBS VFS program allowed AR's to be contested on a trial basis. The only instance of someone taking advantage of this was at my club in PA. He shot a few matches and gave up on it. There were no problems what-so-ever. The stipulation was that it could not be mag fed for obvious reasons. The trial period has ended and AR's are not approved to be used in the VFS program.

There was a guy at the 2013 600 nationals who shot an AR-10 in 243AI just to let you know it has been done. Not sure how he did, didn't get his name.

Not everyone on this forum shoots competition. So, for someone like myself, who just likes to shoot small groups and shoot long range varmints, I'm very happy with my Savage. Including the trigger. 8 ounces and safe is good enough for me. I actually can afford a custom. I almost bought a BAT, but just couldn't justify it to myself to spend 3 times as much for MAYBE a very small difference.

It's also my opinion, that if you took the winner of a match, and hypothetically changed nothing but the custom action, to a properly setup Savage PTA, he's still the winner. The shooter, barrel, and ammo are much more crucial.

That being said, if I was going to shoot competitively, I would have a custom to give myself the best possible chance of success.

waterfwir, very well said. You have done a good job of saying what a lot of the Savage people have been trying to express.

Except that is a perfect world scenario, because the guy with the 2 ounce trigger (that isn't slam firing) and smoother action is at better odds even if the Savage can print paper as good or better..

That kinda depends on the shooter. Some guys shoot slow and pick their condition and some run them out fast as they can. I am the latter so it's it's all about smoothness for me.
