Custom actions and Barrels?

When you guys are using a custom action such as BAT/Stiller/Lawton how precise is the machining from one action to another?
In other words can one take a Stiller action for instance and order a chambered barrel from someone like Bartlein to fit without problems?
Common sense tells me NO, but I don't know?

On the other hand, if you have the above custom action fitted/chambered with a Barrel from a Custom Gun Smith does he retain the measurements so a new barrel can be ordered to exactly fit?

I'm not a machinist so I really don know?

Kelbly's have stated that they can do this as their tolerances are tight. I know of guys that use their gunsmith in this way...i.e. they no longer ship the panda action off for a chambering job.

If your gunsmith knows what he is doing he will only need your action once. If your action is a Kelbly, gunsmith does not need action ever.

Mike Davis does my barrel work for me. I have a BAT MB action. I sent him the action once and he has not needed it since to do additional barrels. I think the same could be said about Savage actions!!!! Just kidding. That was for you Erik.

Stiller maybe not. . . .

BAT and Kelbly yes. Kelbly send barrels to Australia pre chambered and haven't seen any issues.

I've got 2 BAT actions built 5 yrs apart and I can swap barrels, bolts and brass between them both and they are perfect. Like within .000125 which would almost be wear in the mating surfaces

That is a nice #, how does one verify that?

Does Stiller use cheaper equipment? Is the quality based off tolerances engineered for hunting/tacticool actions?

On every Stiller Predator action, that I have put barrels on, the same printed spec sheet came with them. All the measurements were the same.

Back in the day when I used to work for a living, I used a CMM machine that measured to one micron or
0.0000393700787402 inch. The mileage on your receiver may vary. ::)

How many environmental conditions could very that measurement?

Hi all,,,it is great to have the resources of so many skilled individuals at our disposal,,,,I am a guy that measured with a six foot rule most of the time in my working lifetime,,,,and am curious how these extreme precision measurements are derived,,,,is a micron usually measured optically rather than mechanically ??? ,,Roger

Every conceivable one including whether or not the operator had bean soup the day before.

Questions on Extractors/Egectors and bolt head types? Please read entire post.

There are about 3 types of Extractors listed, the plunger/ Sako/ mini 16.

There are about 3 types of bolt head types Flat/ Coned/ Recessed.

I am not familiar with the Virtues/Problems of these in regard to buying a custom action and in the building a 6mm Dasher.

I would really appreciate knowledgeable responses on this subject matter.
Thank you.

The coned bolt works well as it allows smooth transition for loaded round between loading ramp and chamber, but it does not work with repeaters.

Most of these actions will not eject A dasher case unless you get the mechanical type of ejector or a sako on the Bat. The slide type ejectors with the extractor on the lug lets the case move into the lug recess and the case wants to fall off on the way back. The Sako is at a different position on the bolt and lifts the case up slightly as the case comes back and it will eject. The mechanical type of ejector brings the case back straight and hits the ejector and kicks the case out. The coned bolt is like Eric says and helps align the bullet going into the chamber so it doesn't catch. It helps when running in a Match. Neither has anything to do with having a gunsmith chamber a barrel. A good gunsmith can chamber you a barrel after having your action one time. Matt
