curious what everyone considers the be the best of the best scope

I buy products because of quality and not warranty. If I bought for warranty I would buy Leupold. My personal opinion is none come close to the March line of scopes for competition. I have a friend that has a 2.5X25 and it is the cat's meow. It is a hunting scope. I use Zeiss 3X9 Davari for most of my hunting rifles and have a few 2.5X8 Leupold hunting scopes.

I like what has been previously posted, but if you want an affordable scope buy a new weaver.

I have three Leupold Benchrest scopes. Last year, I got a Weaver "T" series Benchrest scope, and I gotta tell you - wow - if I had to have only one of the two, I would take the Weaver - it's not as "pretty" on the outside, but better optics, and better turret tracking.

It's no contest.

Just the opposite of my experience. My Weaver did not have good optics. The tracking was great when I could see the bullet holes well enough to change the POI.

Over 30 years we have used and tested every conceivable scope available for hunting purposes in our custom builds and/or factory rifles. Depends on your hunting conditions. Thick eastern brush and woods or maybe Kansas extreme long range prairie shots. The new 5-6 multiples are a god send. The new Leupold VX- 6's are awesome. But price comes into play for the very finest. However if you are in the LEUPOLD VX-3 price range, for the money, our personal favorite are the Zeiss Conquests. They have a lifetime transferable warranty, etched reticles, quick focus eye piece, much superior low light resolution to any thing in its class. We have never returned one for repair. The 3-9x 40 is actually cheaper than many Leupolds. The 4.5-14x 44 or 50 has a side parallex focus and unbelievable resolution. Equal to many high end scopes. Give them a look. I don't think you will be disappointed. Just me .02 cents after using them all in a hunting situtation.

You're right and I'm not bagging using the warranty as a tie breaker if quality is comparable - I'm bagging on the notion that you would rule out a top piece of glass because it doesn't have a lifetime warranty. I think Nightforce is a decent scope (although they recently discarded the only configuration I would consider in their lineup) and if you think it's comparable to some of the other $2K+ scopes out there, that's fine too. But not looking at a quality piece of equipment because it doesn't have a lifetime warranty is silly, IMO.

I know its completely different but in the car audio industry one of the best manufactures only offers a 30 day warranty which is low to industry standards. I was hesitant to buy from them. Now ts all I will buy. I will say ive used leupolds, vortex's and rcbs's warranty service and you get a good feeling when they fix your issue without any hesitation.

Ya know, as this string of posts moves along, I have started to think, "the best” for what particular application? I own a couple of NF scopes and a March as well, but honestly, the scope I go to for load testing on any of my irons only rifles is a 1990 vintage Leupold 3.5x10x40 tactical model that still sits (on occasion) on my old work rifle. The system was put into cold storage and I got lucky and got the chance to buy it, so it’s sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Sorry, I digress. This scope has NEVER failed me no matter how "mission critical" the task was. So no matter the price, if I had to pick one of my scopes for 800 or less, it would be that scope. Perfect, for every application, nope. But, what is?

I am partial to Leupold vari X 111, 2.5x8 on my go to hunting rifles. I have had them for years and have not had any problems. They mount low are very clear and are light in weight. I had a Weaver T36 on my 12 FTR for couple of years and for the money I thought it was a great scope. I switched to a Sightron 10x50 last spring and am totally happy with it. I just built a 6 Dasher Marlin X7 carry rifle, and am thinking about a Cabelas Euroscope (Europta I think) 4x12 or so. Petzal is high on the Europta brand, and their light transmission is over 98%. I have to sell a Leupold Vari X 11, 6x18 first. Barlow

For my hunting scopes, I have gone to the Trijicons. The 1-4X with the green dot on my dangerous game guns and the 3-9x on my .30 Cals. Although the red triangle works great in the deep woods also. I use NF for the target guns and Sightrons on the AR15 varmint guns. I had a couple of Leupold VX 3s 6.5-20 and after I used their repair service the second time for bad adjustments, I sold them. I do have one of the original Leupold 16X Mk1 Ultra's that I used on my .300 Win Mag prone gun for years. It still works great. Oh, I have a Vortex FFP on my 98B.
I guess that's why they make Fords and Chevys.

I have owned most of the high end glass other than March and Swarovski. Standouts are Hensoldt and Schmidt & Bender for glass, Nightforce for durability. IOR, Premier, and Leupold BR fixed power are nice too. You absolutely can not beat European glass for clarity, period but get ready to pay.

This question is really depending on who you ask... or on what group of people also.

I was at the benchrest nationals two ish years ago and there was like 25 shooters on the line. I walked down the line and took note of every scope that was being used. Of the 25 shooters... two had leopuld. there was one march scope. there was one sightron and all the rest were nightforce. Im not saying nightforce is the best but there are sure a lot of good shooters using them in the bench world.
