Crow Season Opener

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
Went outside this morning and hearing crows reminded me that season opens today. I went back in and checked the rule book. Yes indeedy, game on! My shotgunning is a mite rusty. Went 1 for 5. :( Came back and had lunch. My wife looked out the window and there were 5 crows sitting in the field. I rushed around and grabbed my 25-06. I loaded a 75 grain Vmax into the chamber and eased out the backdoor. One shot, one kill at 3560 feet per second. They aren't laughing at me now :)

Crow season? Why?
Here is the rule in Texas
Yellow-headed, red-winged, rusty, or Brewer's blackbirds and all grackles, cowbirds (does not include cattle egret), crows, or magpies may be controlled without a federal or state depredation permit when found committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in numbers and in a manner that constitutes a health hazard or other nuisance.
Basically no closed season, no bag limit. I like the part about "when found committing or about to commit"

We have pretty much the same wording in WI. but there's still a legal hunting season. I'll bet you have a season there also. I've been told that it has to do with an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico. Pretty hard to tell the game warden that those crows were about to do damage when you're out there with a caller going! Regarding the agreement let's contact DJT after the inauguration and renegotiate.

I loved shooting crows with my .17 Rem.....perfect sight picture of the red mist and raining down of little crow pieces!
I have a brake on the 25. I saw the destruction! It's pretty tame with the brake and 75 grainers. NF 5.5-22x56 DD reticle zero stop it is a joy to shoot.

People

People laugh at me when I talk about crow hunting, l love it and what I like best is there usually isn't anyone else out there to worry about. If you haven't tried it I suggest you get a caller and give it ago. They are smarter then ya think

I offered the shotgun killed one to my brother's son in-law. He's a Chicago Bears fan so thought that he would like eating crow :D He declined the offer ;)

Crows are pretty darn smart critters. My Foxpro has a crow gathering call and the first time we used it had maybe 20 crows within 3 minutes, blasted 3. Waited about an hour and tried again. Got maybe 5 crows overhead, got one. Came back a month later to same area and fired the caller up and all I got was the sentry flying high overhead squawking at me and I could hear the rest raising a ruckus on the other side of a large thicket. It was at least 3 years before we went back and same thing. The sentry flew high overhead and the rest of the murder stayed out of sight.

I learned to crow hunt with the same guy who convinced me to buy a .17 Remington back in '98. We would hunt with a couple of rifles (usually he and I) and anyone else usually had shotguns. We hunted mainly in forested areas. He would set up a caller and play a baby crow/hawk attack tune and it would draw a flock in. From experience he could identify the 'alpha' crow(s) and designate the ones to snipe with the .17's. If we were successful in eliminating the 'command and control' element, the remainder of the flock would get very confused and swoop from the trees looking for 'the baby in distress'; the shotgunners then had their fun. In addition, any crows down and not out from the shotgunners were left alive on the ground to make actual distress calls that brought in more crows. We usually had a good fifteen minutes of shooting before having to move a mile or so for a new set. If we did not eliminate the alpha crows with the first volley it was usually game over pretty quick as, like mentioned, crows are very smart.

Love shooting crows.Comes from agriculture upbringing. Started with .22 rimfire, went to 220 Swift, to shotgun when Fla made crows migatory.
Now use Air Force PCP .22 Talon. Have to get close.
