Cross Hair / Scope Leveler

Thanks for all the great instructions. I am still trying to eliminate some of the variables in the "leveling" process. Reading the comments confirms for me that the rail or the top of the action or the scope bottom or turret top may or may not be square/true to their relative bore or tube axis. So in trying to find the best way to get the rifle level in relation to the action I had a friend mill down the width a machinists parallel bar to fit inside the action and ride along the action rails of my bolt rifle. This I slide into the action and leave enough extending out the back of the action to place a level (starrett 135 pocket level) on the tail of the parallel bar. I use the Wheeler Professional Reticle Leveling System barrel level and clamp it on to the barrel for a reverence. So with both levels in place i think I might have a pretty level platform. The starrett is easy to read and i trust it. A good quality parallel bar should be almost perfectly flat but I bought mine used and dinged up, on Ebay and checked with a true straight edge for flat. I also used a stone to remove the sharp edges from the parallel bar. So, good, bad or otherwise i would appreciate any comments on what this method might be accomplishing when combined with the flashlight and plumb bob.

Should be just fine if you want to use that to level the rifle and use the light method to get the scope leveled out. The only thing i can think of is if your raceways in the action are not perfectly level. But then again it should be good. Ive done it with the magnet in the raceways and it turned out fine. Just another spot to place a level besides the scope base/rail and even thise sometimes are not square to everything else. I just took another rifle out that i did this method to and set the bubble level while checking tracking and at 1k it was perfectly vertical.
