Coyote too close?

My guess is this Coyote thought 510 yards was far enough away from the house that she could take a stroll accross the north east pasture. Well she was wrong, dead wrong! Stepped out back about 9:00am to glass for deer in the back and spotted her out in the open. Went back inside to grab my 6.5X47, and by the time I got the rifle and a couple rounds, she was almost over a small ridge where I wouldn't be able to see her. Ranged her at 510 so I dialed up 9 MOA plus 6, rested the rifle on the corner of the deck handrail where I just happen to have a 2X6 accross the 90 degree corner (not my first rodeo), waited for her to turn and BOOM!. Short recovery from the recoil, I was able to see feet go up in the air before she rested just out of sight. Fired up the EZ-GO to go see what I had done and this is what I found when I got there. She is not a real big Coyote but she sure ain't gonna get any bigger. Spot on the left rear side is just a spot. Shot her from her right side. I do like this round!

Don`t you love it when a plan comes together. ;D

Yea, "Stay there while I go and get my gun!". Dosen't work every time but this time it did. :)

My wife shot one a few months ago the same way at 475 yards. She was using a .257 Stock Weatherby and today, I used a custom 6.5X47L F-Class with a much more powerfull scope. Her shot was probably more difficult then mine but hey, I beat her by 35 yards right! Winning is winning, isn't it? ;D I gotta hand it to her, she is a darn good shot and I am lucky she loves hunting and shooting like I do. Here is a pic of her deer last year. She is still looking for Mr Bigger this year.

Thanks and I am keeping her for sure.

Load was 130gr Berger VLD-H, 37.3gr RL15, BR4 primers. I am getting 2812 fps with this load.

I don't have many pictures of this buck because he does not go to the feeder and stays well hidden, but this is the guy she is waiting on. This photo was taken early Oct and we have only seen him a few more times during bow season. I hope no one has taken him already. She has passed up several good bucks waiting on this one. This is a nice deer for where I live in Texas and I would love to see her take this buck.

TheSnake,
Nice shot on the yote!

Hope to see you post a pic soon of your wife or even yourself with that buck. Good luck to you and her!

My deer season has just not been well at all this year. Biggest buck Ive seen this year is a 1 1/2yr 6pt. I'm now in Meat mode, and the doe's have not even showed up in 2 weeks. My guess is they are feeding at night, and these warm temps aren't helping either.

Robert,
A off topic question but what kid of a grove of tree's are directly behind your wife's lovely picture?

P.S a good yote is a dead yote IMHO and 510 or 475 either one gives one bragging rights,....excellent shot.

Thanks Wayne. That is an oak tree farm that sits on our east property line. It's owned by a large out of state landscaping company that has these tree farms all over the US. There is normally an abundance of acorns that feed the deer and other critters, but with the drought this year, there were none. We consider ourselves very lucky to have them as our neighbors. The place is very well kept and we can see deer deep into the property throughout the year. We keep an eye on the place and report any trespassers or loose cattle that would damage the irrigation system. Here is a better picture that includes the feeder on my side and a few bucks in velvet. This pic was taken from my back door overlooking the round pen zoomed way in. You can see how our pastures looked all year with the drought down here in Texas.

Robert,
Sorry about the delayed response, thank you for sharing the story, that's a unique opportunity you have going there. I have been hearing about your terrible drought down there, loosing thousands of cattle, it's just terrible. We are having our own drought conditions up here in S.E Washington state but nothing like what your having, I hope you get some relief soon.
Wayne.

Just to follow up on this story and the topics in it:

Well the Wife didn't get a shot at the big buck last season but she did see several good bucks and ended up taking one late in rifle season for the freezer. This is a picture of one she passed up several times while waiting for Mr. Big. She took this picture with her cell phone from the ground while bow hunting at 30 yards. From other game cam pictures, this guy wasn't that tall but he has a 19" inside spread. I shot a pig just before dark the last day of bow season and got an 8pt the next morning first day of rifle season. Together they made some mighty fine sausage that we have been enjoying since.

During last years drought, they talked about it continuing for the next 2 years and although I know there are ares in the mid states that are seeing bad drought conditions currently, we just got 14 inches of rain here on the ranch (thank God) over 3 days and had some smaller showers the months before that. If the somewhat frequent showers continue, we will get another cutting and have enough hay to last through the winter. You can't ask for more than that.

Great coyote pic and shot Robert!
I haven't rolled one in three weeks! The damn heat and Mosquitos have been crazy here in Louisiana. Never thought I'd miss seeing those dirty dawgs!
Think I'll go this evening. Ya got me motivated! Gonna try a 87gr VLD.

Cheers,
Sean
