Couple of 6 PPC questions

First; Is it ok for a fired case not to allow a bullet into the neck, or should there be more clearance on the brass in a fitted neck. The loaded round is .2623" and the fired neck appears as .2634"

In tuning a load what is best to get rid of vertical? Or where should I start?

Thanks

I think .002 clearance will be most guys recommended idea. I run that in the three I have. Depending on what powder you are using will depend on where you start. If you are new to the ppc try 322 first. Start with 26 grains and work up. It will show you what it likes.
Good luck and enjoy the accuracy,
Vern

NO it's not ok for a bullet to not go into a fried case.. a case that has been fired in your chamber a bullet should slightly slip into the fired neck,if not you do not have enough clearence in the neck for good consistant accuracry.

vertical can be caused by many reasons, bench and bag set up to rifle problems ect. if you are asking about load tuning to try and tune out vertical..I would say go up on the powder...go into the rifeling farther with the bullet..if it get's worse go down on the powder..

I have done it both ways, with good results, but currently, based on the advice of shooters that are better than I (long list) I have opted for more clearance, .0025 to .003. In this range, a bullet will slip in the fired case.

When I am looking for a load (loading at the range, shooting carefully over flags) I start with a seating depth (usually into the rifling by an amount that experience tells me should be close) and start low, perhaps 27 grains, and shoot one shot per load, carefully, with .3 grain increases, until I can feel more effort opening the bolt than I like. I do all of this FL sizing for every loading. I take my time, and try to remember the condition that I shot the previous shots in. by looking at the target when you are finished, you should get some ideas as to where you should try to do some more work, refining the charge, and fiddling with very small differences in seating depth. As I understand it, for an average 6PPC, nodes are about 1.2 grains apart. so if you have paper between two shots that were fired quickly, in the same condition, you might try changing your load by a half grain or so, up or down, depending on where you are in relation to your maximum load ( as determined by test) Remember, as you come out of the rifling, even though you are still in to some degree, pressure is reduced, so you may have to change charge weight to get back to the same level of pressure, if that is what you want.

I'm a little late on posting, and I have limited but very educated experience because of the advice of this forum. I bought some prepared 6PPC brass and like yours the bullet would not slip into the case after they were fired. I was getting pretty good groups so didn't worry about it. (Tony Boyer says in his book a bullet should slip into the case by the way.)

After I had fired those cases about 12 times I decided to turn my own, and turn them just slightly thinner than the prepared ones I purchased. The groups improved and indeed a bullet would slip into a fired case. Base on that limited experience I have concluded, at least for this chamber, the additional neck clearance helps accuracy.

Well, by paying extreme attention to the bag placement and tracking... and all the best I could do, considering I forgot my wind flags (Duh!) the rifle's 2 best groups were in the low 2's, and the best clusters within the groups were as low as the 0's for 3 rounds and mid teens for most... If only I could shoot now.

Thanks for the inspiration to focus.

There is nothing like a really accurate rifle for teaching you how much small things can matter, and about the subtleties of reading flags. Good for you! Carry on.
