6SLR - A couple of questions

Hey guys,
1.) I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me which bushing I should get with my dies.
I have a PT&G reamer en route .274 neck and .085 freebore and will be using a benchmark barrel.
I will be using Winchester brass as well.
Should I get the .269, .270 and .271 and experiment with neck tension or should I turn necks or both?

2.) Is there any merit to trying to do load development while fireforming or should I just fireform 50 brass and do load development after?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but I am new to this calibre.

Thanks in advance
Ivo

A .270 bushing will give you about what you need for the .274 neck reamer.
My loaded rounds are .273 unturned with that bushing..
It never hurts to have one over and under the .270 just in case...
As far as fireforming, they seem to shoot really good the first time out of the die...
43.5 grains of H-4831 SC is the load for 95% of the bullets used....
I have tried others, but in 3 rifles I have always gone back to 43.5.......
If the 108's and down, don't shoot that load, something is wrong..

preacher is certainly a knowledgeable fellow but the neck diameter on the reamer has nothing to do with what bushing you need only the loaded round diameter at the neck. you have to decide before you order the bushing if you want to turn neck and to what diameter and then order a bushing .002 below loaded round diameter. that's where I start anyway.

Out of the 3 different barrels with different .274 neck reamers, a .270 bushing has been the one to use in all of them... Winchester brass unturned and loaded has a .273 neck diameter 99 % of the time...

Just jumping in here as I have a reamer that should be on it's way to me next week and this has me thinking.....

I believe Robert Whitley's drawing of his reamer and the reamer that was suggested to me by Dave Kiff has a .275 neck. Which based on a loaded round of .273 (99% of the time), should be just right (for me). However, I am thinking just in general, that I would want a .271 bushing to begin with as it will give me about .002 tension.

Preacher have you tried less tension on the necks, or have you simply went with .270 (.003 tension) and stayed with it based on good results?

Thanks!!

All 3 of the rifles with a .274 neck had bushings used ranging from .273 down to .268, and for those 3 the .270 worked out the best with 108 BT Target Berger's.....
It's always a good idea to try different size bushings, you just never know what will work the best until you try it..

I would like to add that with spring back a .271 bushing will likely yield .001 neck tension, not .002 on that loaded round that is .273".

Good point.

It so just happens that my redding bushings actually size .001 more than they are marked. For example, the .271 actually sizes my necks to .270.....My .269 sizes my brass to .268. Anyone else seeing this with their bushings?

I'm even seeing this trend with my .20BR bushings.

Guys,
Thanks so much for the information. I think I will get the .269, 270 and the .271. I'll start with the .270 find a load and experiment from there.
Thanks again,
Ivo
