Corrective Lens & Shooting Glasses

I am 51 and wear glasses with bifocals. I am a new F/TR shooter. What do you wear for glasses when shooting? Can you get shooting glasses with corrective lenses? I am just getting old enough wear "seeing well" is at times a significant part of "shooting well". I am interested in thoughts from those of you who face the same challenges. Thanks!

There is a fellow I shoot with that has amber colored shooting glasses that are also corrective lenses... I took a different route, I went with LASIK... I had never seen shooting glasses that are also corrective lenses>>but obviously they make them... Who and where they are made, I never asked... I imaging Google could point you in the right direction..

I use industrial grade safety glasses as shooting glasses. My optician makes them for me. They are the same cost as regular street glasses.

Gun Guy,
Welcome to the beginning of the decline in a lot of areas...it's called aging...what a wonderful experience you have awaiting you. Having said that, take a look at www.bulzeyepro.com . They manufacture "Optical Boosters" and make them for various quality scopes. I have one on my Leupold 35X that I shoot in competition as well as for good ole fun. It's a quality product, not cheap, but helps when age starts to mess with your eyesight. If you think things are going south now, wait till you go over 65 and you'll wish you were 50. In any case, good luck in your new found F/TR shooting. The aforementioned Boosters make a difference and work.

Decot.com, glasses. They have lenses, which can be individually changed, made to your scrip, reasonably priced. Call them up, tell them my new scrip(for aiming eye), single vision or bi focal, lenses on way in 10 days or so. Been using them for 10yrs.

Gun Guy,

I am in the same boat as you. Take a look at ESS www.esseyepro.com as you do your research. They have their own ANSI lab and can handle prescriptions straight through the web site.

Stay safe,

+1 for Decot. Excellent service

If your not on a budget I would go with Oakley. I have a couple pair and they are really clear , and don't have any blurry spots. As far as color its up to you , have talked with my optometrists and he advised me that color doesn't give you any advantage seeing the targets and to purchase clear lenses. Like I said color is up to you.

If the correction you need is for far-sightedness, this is how I handled it. I bought a pair of eyeshields from ESS and then added these stickon lenses: http://goo.gl/qEHlfk. I used the eyepiece diopter adjustment to focus the reticle without any prescription. Then you use the stickon lenses for the up close stuff. Much cheaper than prescription sun/shooting glasses. 8)

Decot - I'm 67 and shoot open sights & scoped.
I also have an eye Dr. that lets me bring my gun to his office for the right prescriptions. 8) Also rather than bifocals my shooting glasses have a right lens (I’m right eyed) that is “close” and left lens that is “far”.

I had Lasik done and it works fine for shooting through optics. Using irons sights though doesn't work as well. Even with Lasik you will experiences presbyopia or your near sigh going off. Supposedly the lens in your eye keeps growing but stays the same size. This means it has to get denser and you muscles have an issue trying to bend them to focus.

Having gone through that I wonder if the lens replacement isn't the best way to go. You get both near and far vision and you can wear regular shooting glasses and not be positioned out of the sweet spot in the prescription.

I am near sighted. I also have bifocals in my current glasses. When prescription shooting glasses are ordered should one order them with the bifocal or only with the base prescription? Wondering what some of you have done. At this point I need to avoid Lasik, etc. due to something to lengthy to describe here so I need to go the prescription glasses route at the present time. Thanks again for your assistance and reply.

I wear both the old style line bifocals and the newer style no line prescription glasses but prefer shooting with only non prescription safety or clear shooting glasses on. I am able to do that by adjusting the scope eyepiece to put the crosshairs in focus and adjust the paralax for the target. With my prescription glasses on the eyepiece adjustment on my Sightron lll 10-50x60 is at mid travel of adjustment and with non prescription safety glasses on it is adjusted almost all the way out. The representative at Sightron told me this procedure was ok but not to use the eyepiece adjustment all the way out near or against the stop and this was for a optical reason and not a mechanical one. After talking to the representative at Bulzeyepro.com I decided to give their Optical Booster which mounts on the scope eyepiece a try. It worked great and with it mounted and adjusted wearing plain safety glasses my eyepiece focus adjustment returned back to the midpoint travel of adjustment and I also have increased magnification if I need it. This procedure has worked for me for several years even though I have had the prescription for my eyeglasses changed several times. With the addition of the Bulzeypro Optical Booster I think I will be able to go several more years using this procedure. The only hassle with this procedure is having to put my regular glasses back on when I am not shooting.
