Corona virus delivered to your door?

Comparing the statistics for other countries with the U.S. and a buck and a quarter will get you a cup of joe at the local quickie mart.
They didn't get their act together and shut down everything soon enough and their health care systems were overwhelmed. Italy is the prime example. They are now picking and choosing who lives and who dies.

Imagine whatever you want. The characteristics of this virus suggest the possibility of very high infection rates. It is sobering to hear that, for example, the Chief Medical Officer for the United Kingdom talked last week of the possibility of between 60% and 80% of the population contracting the virus. Now he is quick to indicate that he thinks 80% is "the absolute top end of the range of the population that would get infected". He goes on to say:

"Our expectations, certainly my expectation, is that it will be less than that and probably a lot less than that. And there well may be a lot of people, we don’t know yet, who get this infection without any symptoms at all.

"But it is important that we plan for the worst that is currently plausible."

However, it is clear these experts are not thinking it appropriate, based on what we know today, to think in terms of fractions of one per cent or a few per cent for the likely infection rate. (BTW, a 1% mortality rate on 80% of the UK population is 531,000 people.)

So yeah I do think based on current trends and expert opinions that there's a pretty good chance of infection and, again, that all but a small percentage will be fine. But even low mortality percentages applied to high infection rates yield some ugly numbers. We shall see. Hopefully we don't end up there.

I'm almost 68 and the wife is 62 with diabetes plus had 6 months of chemo last year. That puts us at a higher risk. We picked up out last order of food from WallyWorld (ordered online, picked up outside), set up a CVS drive through for prescriptions so we shouldn't have to venture out for at least 2-3months. We plan to stay at home and ride it out. Plenty of food, a well, a generator, over 75 gallons of gasoline plus both vehicles are full. Hopefully neither of us is infected at this point. Some people may say it's silly but if it's gets bad, it's not, and if it doesn't, we'll have a good laugh sometime in the future. I pray that this blows over and doesn't hit the numbers they say is possible.

Everyone stay safe!

My wife just told me to quit rolling my eyes and poo-pooing this whole affair. Said that some folks are taking it seriously and I'm being an ass by making fun of it. She is often right.

I tried watching some MSNBC last night just to see what those folks have to say. MY GOD!!! Those folks are the most deranged, unhappy people I've ever seen. Matter of fact, the only thing that will make them happy is for this virus to devastate humanity. Pessimism is like a drug for them. It seriously sounds like they WANT the death toll to increase, and hurry up about it. jd

Well I got an amazon package today, I opened it, cleaned the item with a Lysol wipe, washed my hands. I plan on doing this until the pandemic is over.

My daughter, the college professor (with a couple kids, so she lives in the real world) with her PHD in Public Health & Epidemiology, posted this on Instagram:

Everybody: Why did they close the offices and schools, and make us hide at home, hardly anybody got sick?
Epidemiologist: Right, that was the idea.

Everybody: No one I know died. Total overreaction!
Epidemiologist: Right, that was the idea.

This is getting serious folks: "Joy Behar Taking Leave of Absence from ‘The View’ Due to Coronavirus"

What kind of message does this send to the 5 people who watch the show?
Well, if those 5 are anything like me, the message I get is, I hope she doesn't return. She's about as miserable as any talk show host I can speak of. If there is anyone I'd send TP, PT or any other necessity items to JUST to stay home, it'd be her.
