Cooper trigger adjustment

muleman69

Have a model 54 Cooper and was wondering if anyone new how to adjust trigger wt. of pull? There is a post on adjusting the model 21,would it be the same?

I have the models 21 and 22 and they are the same. You have to take the action out of the stock to get to the adjustment screw. It should be easy enough to take out and check for the screw on your model 54

I have a Model 22...the owner's manual covers a Model 21, 22, and 38. I don't know, but the Model 54 trigger may have a different screw arrangement.

Be sure your safety works properly after adjusting. I've seen Cooper triggers when set up for minimal sear engagement and over travel have safetys that wouldn't work. But I've never seen one that couldn't be set up very nicely and still have the safety work.

All my Cooper rifles are live varmint bench rifles. As such, I've found the best fix is to just replace the Cooper trigger with a Jard. Mine all wear the Jard 10 oz. trigger, and I could not be happier......and they break like the proverbial glass rod.

The factory trigger is decent, but just cannot be adjusted to a light enough weight for the type of shooting I/we do.

One trick you can do with the cooper trigger is replace the trigger spring. I replaced mine with a youdave spring for a tikka trigger. That will get you in the 1 lb range. That worked very well! (I later replaced both triggers with jard 2 oz triggers though)

Rick, does the Jard come with a safety?

My (used) 6mm Rem. M22 came with a 1/2# pull - and the safety didn’t work. I increased the pull weight, got the safety working, but only for one cocking; if I re-cock a second time without firing a round or dry firing, it’ll slam fire!!!
Looks like it’s time to have an expert look at it, or get a Jard (although I really want a little more than its 10 oz.-max pull).

Answer: "Yes". Fairly easy to install too. Only had an installation issue with one out of five units, and my smith had no problem with it. Another nice aspect of the Jard triggers is that they all can have pull weights changed by way of the trigger spring....10 oz, 2 oz, whatever pull weight is wanted.

Not a Jewell, but about the closest thing you'll find for a Cooper rifle. :)
