Cooling hot barrel

I have been doing the wet paper towels draped over the barrel from muzzle to the scope routine this summer and has not harmed anything so far, thinking of buying or making a chamber cooler https://www.chamberchiller.com/

What caliber are you wanting to use this in? You can get two battery holders with a switch and two 60mm fan for $20 or so on Ebay. 3D printing a nozzle is easy enough.

I use a Snap Air USB-rechargeable mattress pump (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L6TGGQA/?tag=accuratescom-20) and a length of plastic tube. Compared to commercial models, it pushes a LOT of air down the barrel. The only drawback is it does not act as a true chamber flag if that's required on the bench at your range.

It's highly portable so can be used if the rifle is standing up. I've not found it necessary, but you can also put the pump in a cooler to draw cold air.

Never had to recharge the pump at the range, but it can run directly off USB so a battery pack - perhaps one with a spare port like the one driving the Labradar - will satisfy any high-use requirement.

If you had something yellow that fit over the tube, would that qualify?

How noisey are these? Most people that have fans at the range I shoot at are pretty noisey. I would be pretty interested in that if they were pretty quiet.

Don't know, I've just never bothered. You could probably tape the flag part from a real chamber flag to the tube, near the end. That's all that's visible anyhow.

But frankly, if one can see a real chamber flag in place, it would be hard to miss the long tube hanging out of the open chamber. But some would probably find it a technical violation of the rules.

Leaving aside what else is going on when the range is hot, anyone wearing real ear protection should have no issue with the noise from this particular pump.

When the range is crowded, I use it most often when the range goes cold (we run ~20 minute cycles during those times). No one has complained. It's not noisy enough to preclude conversation at the same bench where it is in use. But it's hard to judge what folks may find objectionable these days :)

I suppose one could drop it in their range bag or cooler to further reduce the noise level.

That pump sounds interesting if it puts out enough of a volume of air. I use a similar setup that works very well but is bulky. I shoot at my own range so that doesn't matter. I find even on hot 85-90° day, 30-60 seconds of air in between shots keeps the barrel cool enough I can hold it without getting burnt. A smaller self contained pump sure would be nice and easier to carry. I think I'll have to order one.

Can you put the tube in the muzzle end, flag in the chamber.
Not if the chamber flag plugs chamber and blocks air flow.

Otherwise . . . the good thing about using the chamber is it squeezes enough of the tube to form an adequate seal without a fitting. One of the fittings that come with the pump may work in the muzzle end, or you can fashion something else.

I was over at Wally World getting a new air mattress pump and saw this mini USB powered air pump for $12.88, about a quarter size of the regular mattress pump. It puts out a lot more air than the Chamber Chiller I normally use and is much quieter than the full size pump(which is overkill) and requires a bigger power supply. I can run this off of my Labradar power bank and I think it will bean improvement during my hot summer months.cool2.jpgcool.jpg

Only thing I could possibly imagine is water running down into the trigger somehow
Well my concern would with placing the ice cold towel on the barrel. Top of barrel gets the cold shot and contracts no matter how fast you get it on the bottom. Of course the bottom contracts but do you think everything is returning to straight.
Just my thoughts.

I use a battery powered mini pump similar to that of @wedgy for the bore and two micro fiber wet clothes for the outside. I slide one between the chassis and the scope and the other cover the barrel out to the brake. My water tube isn't ice cold but cold enough it only takes a few minutes between the air flow and the clothes. never seem to make a difference in group or POA/POI.

That's exactly what I use and I don't live down south. Just impatient. ;)
I made a soft coupler to comply with different barrel diameters out of a piece of 10-speed inner tube.

Hoot

Will this run off a battery pack that you use to charge your phones with? They are the square ones about the size of a phone and they have a usb port too.

Wedgy, Same question as I asked Hoot. Will they run off a battery pack you use to charge your phone? I have about 4 battery packs if they work.
