I use the battery operated air pump for keeping your minnow bucket aireated. Works great.

I've seen those used but would be concerned that they only move a tiny amount of air.

I use a white towel soaked in cold water, fold it and lay it over the barrel to aid in cooling it off. I shoot pdogs, when I change rifles, I leave a cold towel on the hot one for a few minutes and the barrel cools right down. Been using this method for years.

i've used this during an f class match in our club matches it 45 rounds in 40 minutes here in bama it gets hot in the summer months

I built my barrel cooler using this exact battery powered air pump but with a different name which was sold in the sporting goods department at WalMart. Works great. I have used vinyl hose from the pump to a brass shell with the head cut off and some silicon glue to cement the hose inside the proper caliber shell and I have used vinyl hose inside a bore guide. Both give you a good seal in the chamber. The pump came in both D Cell or 12 Volt power. I have also set the pump in a small cooler with ice packs in it to get cool air in the hot summer months. I drilled two small holes in the cooler lid. On one end of the lid I have a small hole for the hose going from the pump to the barrel and on the other a hole for air going into the cooler. For real quick cooling I will use a cold damp towel on the barrel in addition to the air pump system.

Stand the gun up with the chamber open, the chimney effect will take it from there. It doesn't take as long as you would think.

BarrelCool has the same effect on cooling as standing a rifle on end, utilizing the chimney effect, but the rifle can be kept horizontal and can be used during cease fires because it doubles as an empty chamber indicator.

I use an air mattress pump, a length of tygon tubing and attach it to a nylon bore guide I made up specifically for the application. I use rechargeable flashlight batteries. You can get the pumps with wiring to connect to a different battery setup or AC current. When the weather turns cool, I use the chimney effect method.

I was able to get some cooling tests with a 7mm, 1.25" straight contour, 7mm barrel and BarrelCool. Thermocouple probes are Speer Scientific 800007, attached to the outside of the barrel. Outside barrel temp was taken up to 135-140 degrees by using a heat gun and heating the barrel from the inside of the bore. Once the outside barrel temperature reached ~135-140 degrees F, the heat was removed and allowed to cool down to 100 degrees or for a duration of 20 minutes, whichever came first, with and without BarrelCool. Temperature was recorded in 1 minute intervals and the experiment done twice to ensure the test and data was repeatable. The data shows that Barrelcool took 8-9 minutes less to get to 105 degrees and shows as much as a 11 degree difference using BarrelCool in the same amount of time.

Testing was done indoors, in a 65 degree room and the barrel off the rifle.

This is the prototype in a F-Class rifle, 1.25" straight, 32" barrel and how it is installed and its effect on a lighter's flame all the way out to 7-11 inches.

I still us this today. I still haven't quantitatively compared the cooling rates. I have a volt meter with themistor probe that I could tape to the barrel and shoot a few 20 shoot strings the next time I practice for F-Class. All I can tell you is that it works.

That works well as does pumping water thru it with a small water feature pump and ice chest to catch the return.

We cooled barrels with 4-6 oz of water down the barrel on red hot p. dog towns, finest custom guns and barrels made. We have used this method for 30 years.

Follow by pushing 4 patches down the bore on a tight punch type jag, NOT a slotted jag. Then dry the chamber, start back shooting.

There is also the benefit of cleaning the excess carbon out, which extends shot strings.

It is just that simple.
