Considering a 20 caliber...

What advantages does a 20 practical have over the 204 ruger?
Advantages: Barrel life, brass cost, no caliber specific dies needed, you can use .223s,
Disadvantages: Factory built guns and ammo widely available, if reloading, no neck down process, small gain in velocity.

Will a Redding .223 FL S die with the proper bushing work?

Yes, with some modification. remove the .223 button and replace it with a .20 caliber one. I use two bushings and two steps to neck down. Final bushing size is dependent on loaded round diameter and desired neck tension. After the first firing, I dont use the button. One caveat with this round, unless one wants to work with different size bushings, stay with one brand of brass as .223 neck thickness varies quite a bit across manufacturers.

Good read. I also wonder if you could use the .223 S die to neck size .20 TAC once formed?

They had a $30 off sale in Feb. I put a 11tw on order for not much more than a stainless 12tw green mountain. Looking forward to getting this 20 Practical together.

Received the barrel in less than 2 weeks.

Matt, I am also looking at a 20P as is a buddy. Keep in touch on reamer and barrels. He wants a rifle and I want to see what it will do in an XP with a 13-16" barrel.
I had tossed around doing a rifle build, still not ruled out.
I am on the fence bouncing back and forth and narrowed to 223AI or the 20P.

Recommendations?
I'm still in building mode of my first one. Just ordered the reamer. I'm using an 11tw X-caliber blank, and my gunsmith @300rum will turn and chamber it.

From what I researched, any of those barrels would probably be fantastic. I would have went with cost and lead time if I was picking from those.

I'm going to start gathering up parts for a 20 practical build. If i find a 204 cheap in the mean time I'll grab that.

Matt
