Comparison of .300WM .300 PRC .300 NM

I'm looking for a pic or pics comparing the .300WM, .300 PRC, and the .300 NM. Either AB, BC, AC, or all three together.

Also interested in any tabular data on case capacity, nominal OAL and powder charge for mag length loads, water volume/capacity, expected velocity ranges with given bullets, etc.

Just trying to wrap my head around how they all stack up.

Thanks!

Hey Monte, I don't have pictures comparing the 3. You still shooting in Oregon?

Norma has a good bit more powder capacity than either, and once Berger releases a 250gr bullet it will be better. Most guys are shooting the 230gr bullets around 2950 to 3100 if my reading was correct.

300PRC falls between the two.

I have a good bit of experience with 300WM. With the right chamber and bullet it's still competitive. I went through a gunsmith friend of mine in Tacoma for mine. He uses an A191 Chamber which is a longer throat optimized for the heavy bullets. I am comfortably able to get 2900 to 3000fps out of the 215gr Berger Hybrid, 220 Lapua Scenar, and the new 200 SMK using Norma brass and H1000.

- I posted some photos at http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/lapua-300-norma.3964611/ of the 300 Norma Mag with 230 gr. Berger & 230 gr. Sierra (new) MK's

300winmag brass from different mfg's has different capacities.
From my notes (to the nearest 1/2 gr)...

F.C. = 92.5
R.P.= 88.5
Norma = 95
Win. = 93.5

If you already have a 300winmag, there is no reason to change. RL-33 gives the 300winmag new life with heavy bullets. No problem getting 2,800+ fps with 240smk with RL-33 in a 26" bbl. in F.C. brass.

Brass is plentiful and very cheap compared to the others.

Whatever happened to the 300 Pegasus ???

The 30 Nosler is almost perfection for a 30 cal in a standard action. If Lapua would make cases I wouldnt look any further. Im going the Norma route due to lapua cases.

300 Pegasus has 30 gr more capacity than the 30-338 Lapua / 300 Lapua mag.
.27" taller Shoulder, other than that, it's the exact same dimensionally, dunno about case capacity, perhaps there are different versions of the Peg? Nothing I have any use for,,, going from PRC Target Round to the Peg is a very long stretch. It always seems someone has to list some overbore useless Cartridge up against the 300 PRC. Next I'm sure I'll see 30-375 Cheytac. lol

Thanks for the info guys!

I've got an action that has two bolts (regular magnum and Lapua Magnum) and takes AI mags for .300WM and for .338LM. So I can go either way... .300 PRC or .300NM... without too much trouble, once the current .300WM barrel is toast.

Expected primary use is going to be informal LR (steel) and field ELR type events.

If a guy was to build one of these (30 Nosler) as a repeater, would he run into any feeding issues due to the rebated rim from accurate mags or BDL set up?

Thank you. I have never had any issues from my SAUM imp or edge imp cases. But I have never ran a 30 Nosler.

I was listening to a podcast recently, and it was mentioned that Hornady had voiced some concerns early on about the 300NM case design; something related to potential for unsafe pressures when fired at extreme inclination/declination angles in field scenarios? @DaveTooley do you know anything about that?

I have heard this before. Not necessarily Hornady as the source. I take all these reports with a grain of salt because most of the time they don't pass the sniff test. I've seen it many times. Trigger pullers become gun experts overnight. A case full of H1000 and all of a sudden high pressures just because your inclination is extreme. Doesn't pass the sniff test. YMMV
If it did happen I'd wager there's a good carbon ring contributing to the problem.

BTW COAL with a 225 ELD-M .010" off the lands 3.730"
