Colorado Guided Prairie Dog Hunt

Yeah, right.....have you ever gone out for PD's or ground squirrels, shot ten or fifteen and quit? Neither have I nor anyone else I'm aware of. I'll just ask the inevitable question, considering your post....have you ever been out for PD's or squirrels?
everyones not the same, and yes I have shot squirrels and Pdoggys in my life,I'm not trying to offend anyone,I'm just not a big time shooter like some,,

It depends on expectations. As mentioned previously there has been a huge upsurge in PD shooters and the PD popuation cannot keep pace with the number of shooters.

We have a crew that does an annual PD hunt on a 40,000 acre private ranch that has no other hunters then us. There are 8 - 10 of us depending on the year and some of the guys are happy to shoot 50 in a day, most probably shoot around a 100 per day, there are two of us who are more dedicated and we usually run about 300 - 350 per day. That means that we take 1300 to 1500 PD's per day for a week for a total of 9100 - 10,500 of every year. Few places can stand that kind of shooting, it is unrealistic to expect guided ranches or public lands to stand up to those numbers year after year. I sincerely believe that within a few years most folks will have to be satisfied with a 100 shots per day unless you have a private access like we do, most public land and a great deal of the guided ranches will be shot out.

I agree with Rick that VHM screwed it up for a lot of us who had it almost to ourselves for years and years.

p.s - At 300 - 350 per day it is fun but beginning to turn into work, I have exceeded those numbers some days and it became more work and less fun.

Yup, you're not the only one there, buddy.

I've been at this since returning to "The World" in 1968. All was very good right up until VHM came on the scene, the 'golden age of varminting' was over. It then became what every yahoo with a rifle wanted to do and join their ridiculous "500 yard club". Didn't know you needed to be in a club to do that.

(But I'll also shamelessly admit to not only writing for them, but selling product in their magazine. Still could have done without them though after seeing what they wrought. It'll never be the same.)

One year we stayed at the Thorobred Inn in White River, South Dakota.About 10 rooms,8 or 9 had shooters, the ranchers started wanting their hand greased, remember when they were thrilled when someone showed up and wanted to shoot dogs for them. One group there were from Chicago area, one guy who could have hunted bear with a switch was bragging about using a M! Garand that day. Some very entertaining eastern hunters.

hit em right in the chest between the front legs when they stand. you will get altitude!

Remember -- work is a four letter word!!! And I agree that when anything turns out to be too much like work, the enjoyment diminishes.

Can't tell if some of these seniors has assheimers or just forgetful. Probably both.

Well, this senior can clearly remember the first ground squirrel I launched with my then new M700 Varmint Spl in 22-250 in 1968. Let's see in another 50 or so years if you're even still able to do what we're talking about here. Wonder if you'll even be allowed to harm the furry little buggers in 50 years, let alone have a rifle to do it with. It ain't what it used to be, that's for certain.

I'm in IOWA.Shot first dog in 1983. Your a bit closer than i to the action. I have missed a year or 2, but go often as possible. Aging body {age 70} is catching up with me. Still remember the first 1000 acre dogtown, shooting 300+ rounds on a belly benchrest. Have pictures somewhere. I never needed 1000 rounds a day. I think many of those stories stretch things bit. Ruger # 1 223. Things have improved since then with custom barrels and a couple different wildcats. Headed out west next month on my first semi guided hunt. It was always a week of fun and camaraderie. Might be the last. Took up the 22 rimfire in my old age.Shoot a club match once a month. Your right, not what it used to be.

buy/build a couple of quality ar's with 24" quality bbls.
350 becomes 'nutting.

Many ranchers and landowners around these parts will not allow any AR's or AK's on their property, not wanting to hear rapid fire or seeing what they term 'assault weapons' on their land. One of my buddies was told to either leave or keep his AR in the truck. So for all of us, it's bolt guns and single shots. No chasing primo brass either. ;)

i have never had that problem in co or wy., must be the at ca influence on or.
i also do not chase brass. an ar is easily TUNED to throw brass in a pile just to the right of the shooter.

Not disrespecting you retired but how do you keep a barrel on your very accurate ar's. I build single shots just to slow me down as I can only afford one barrel per trip. Also who loads your magazines for you. I need one of those people to load for me at night. Ha Ha We just got back and yes some towns were meld down but after 7 days those towns were starting to thin out. Yes I can remember back to 1980's when I had 50-60 dog towns to myself. To bad my budget couldn't keep up. I also agree with wireless that your mileage is not near average.

I'll be out on my Wyoming property in a few weeks till my buddy and I decide to come back to Florida. I'll be shooting 50- 100 on most days. All with my 10/22 Ruger. We're on 11,000 acres that landowners have. We stay in his trailer on his property. You step one foot off our properties on the west side and you are standing on 33,000 acres of BLM property.
