Colorado Guided Prairie Dog Hunt

Some basic math says otherwise, to shoot 500 rounds in a day you would be pulling a trigger on a rifle every minute for 8 hours straight. That's figuring no time for eating, cleaning rifles, getting ammo out, getting a drink, or anything else for that matter. If you really do shoot that much more power to you but that's not common by any stretch of the imagination. I liken your statement to the guy that posts up about every one of his rifles shooting 1/4" groups all day long. Sure there are guys that can do it but it isn't happening for everyone. By the way if you have enough money to build all those rifles and buy the componets for all that ammo why can't you make a small contribution to the forum and become a site supporter?

Wirelessguy: Your posts indicate you have not experienced a high quality varmint hunt and to suggest others are exaggerating is arrogant and small minded.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That being said I know plenty of guys including myself that go on pdog trips every year and never see 500 plus rounds in a day. As I never said it was impossible just not probable for most guys. We as shooters are doing a diservice to those that visit this forum asking for help when we make referrence to numbers for a hunt that we know are not realisitc for the average shooter. All it does is turn new shooters off/away, because of that some of them may never experince the fun of a pdog shoot and that is a shame. There are plenty of guys that would be very happy with the chance to pull a trigger 100 times in a day, who are we to tell them that's a waste of time?
For the record your effort to label me or name call by referring to me as "small minded or arrogant" is pointless.

wireless,
you are making generalities that most of us do not agree with, which is why we said something.
i lived in colorado for 22 years. never in those 22 years was 100 a day considered good or normal.

My comments were very specific and not generalities at all. Its great that your experience has been a high volume of daily shooting over the years. Again as I noted before and will again it's not common place to set in one spot and have a group of guys each shooting 500 plus rounds in a day, I can see it happening if it's one or maybe two guys but when you are working with a group of 4 people those numbers are uncommon. Again your experience may vary and thats ok.

quit making up stories. i never said we did not move. i never said we did not eat. i never said an 8 hour day. all poor assumptions by you.
your opinion is not a fact in colorado nor in wy.

jepp2-We watch our hits in our scopes. If the dog crawls back into his hole we don't count that as a kill-even though he probably dies a minute later. We only count when we see the dead body - or pieces of it flying in the air. We consider those scenarios confirmed kills.

I am not making up stories I am simply replying to your posts. You obviously have a different opinion of the situation than I do and as I have stated before that's perfectly ok, Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Actually, from personal experience, the vast majority of people that I have talked to or hunted with seem to greatly exaggerate their shooting skills and kill ratio. Like the guy (gun store owner) who bragged about decimating a town. Earlier, he couldn't even sight in his rifle at 200 yards without help. So I seriously doubt his claims. Or friends of mine that called "dead dog" every time they pulled the trigger. As I watched, the dog could be seen running to another hole - but he swore he killed it. Or you go out through the "decimated" town and can't hardly find a dead dog.
Or conversing with the guide after the braggarts leave and him telling the truth about how they did. Etc, etc, etc.... I give a bag of salt to the stories which may or may not be true. Like listening to fish stories.
Now before anyone has a conniption, I am sure there are some people who are very accurate, like my hunting buddy who averages about 1.5 rounds per dog. But then, he ain't shooting 600 rounds a day either.

Just curious how you verify a "confirmed kill"? I too use a mechanical counter, but I want to learn your technique.
I was in southern colo. at Holy Colo. That is down in the south east corner. The dogs have the plague.
could not fire 20 shots in a day.

the group i use to shoot with is closer to 80-90%. we seldom shoot over 350 yds, we spend time at the range sighting in and working up loads. 1.5 is 66%, not great.

Yes there probably some large dog towns somewhere. But i'm convinced the Varmint Hunters magazine ruined the sport. Back in the mid 80's you might have seen 1 or 2 shooters. Now they are everywhere. The Eastern shooters have vivid imaginations.

We use to shoot PD east of Pueblo and about 20yrs ago and it was good. Since then been increase in shooters, couple plagues and few ranches have changed owners. I get out few times each year and it's OK and lot of those ranches had cattle/horses so have to pass on some shots.

why not shoot ten or fifteen and call it a day,,get something to eat,,to drink,,talk about,,CAN YOU EAT THEM,,

Yup, you're not the only one there, buddy.

I've been at this since returning to "The World" in 1968. All was very good right up until VHM came on the scene, the 'golden age of varminting' was over. It then became what every yahoo with a rifle wanted to do and join their ridiculous "500 yard club". Didn't know you needed to be in a club to do that.

(But I'll also shamelessly admit to not only writing for them, but selling product in their magazine. Still could have done without them though after seeing what they wrought. It'll never be the same.)

Yeah, right.....have you ever gone out for PD's or ground squirrels, shot ten or fifteen and quit? Neither have I nor anyone else I'm aware of. I'll just ask the inevitable question, considering your post....have you ever been out for PD's or squirrels?
