I have a Leupold vx3 with a varmint reticle. It has hash marks for 3,4and 500. I have the power turned down slightly (from 14x) to get the 500 hash Dead-on. Which puts the hash 8.8 moa low. Now here's the question, if my ballistic calculator says I need 32.8 moa for a 1000 yard shot could I subtract 8.8 from that and use the 500 hash. 32.8 - 8.8 = 24.

If it is a 2nd focal plane scope, then that reticle is probably designed to work at a certain power (40X for higher magnification scopes; not sure what it would be for that particular scope) for the reticle sub-tensions to be correct. I don't think the math will work like you are thinking, but I could be wrong.

Yes it should work if your speed is right.

Run your ballistics for a 500 yard zero and see what your come ups are for 1K.

Yep, my dad runs his that way. Has his dope card set up for reticle hash mark +/- clicks. He likes it better than dialing in say 45 clicks for 500m as he often forgets to return to zero or will get lost in the dial, especially with non target turrets on his hunting scopes.
