Clickers in 284 win

Using Peterson Brass and Whidden Non-bushing dies. I just fired them for the 7th time. I anneal every firing and size only enough to bump the shoulders 2 thou everytime. Never had clickers/heavy bolt lift with this load before. I'm using an Impact action and it has a significant catch right before the bolt comes all the way up. Is this something I should get into contact with Whidden about? I don't want to just band-aid the issue and would rather have a more permanent fix.

The load I'm using is 49.2 grains of H4350 under a 180 grain berger hybrid. With my 26" barrel I'm getting right at 2710 fps. It has never been a hot load in my rifle, no ejector marks, cratering, or overly excessive case head expansion.

Sounds like it might be time to drag out the small base die.

My personal experience with Peterson brass hasn't been good in terms of extraction. Using the exact same bump on both Peterson and (straight .284) Lapua, there is a pretty stark difference and another skilled handloader concurred. I've found the extraction issues happen far lower in Petersons, eg above 2780 fps with 180 Hybrids/H4350 whereas I can easily drive them at 2830+ in the Lapua cases with -no- extraction issues. Brass treatment is 2.5-3 thou shoulder shift in a Wilson FL bushing die, 30" bbl.

Thanks, good thing I have a new case of lapua brass waiting. Crazy that it took this many firings for the problem to arise.

Try a small base die....if the brass has took a "set" it may or may not work.

Swap to Lapua brass.

Have your smith polish out the backend slightly....this is really just a band-aid fix.

If you are less than .501 at the .200 line you're probably gonna have issues with off the shelf dies unless you luck out and get the right one.

This...I run Peterson brass in a 284 Shehane, but I had the reamer designed especially for Peterson brass knowing the dimensions were a little different to Lapua. 13 times fired and no clickers but it's food for thought if you decide to adopt any other calibres in the future.

New Barrel New Reamer for Laupa .284 Brass ?
Ran Brass Thru Widden Bushing Die . Round in Rifle easy, Firer Open Bolt Snap crackle Pop.

I was told SB Body , your not using one ?
Using the SB Body Die fixed the problem .
I will say one large problem getting that Brass in and out of that Die .

I question my Barrel Guy's Reamer ?

Been helping a friend chase down the same problem. I've seen 3 prints this week that are all have very different dimensions on the base and 200 line.

I believe you need the correct resizer for your reamer.
With the short barrel life in .284 Rifles I will SB this Brass till re-barrel time.
I have another.284 and my Dies all work .

There are a couple post about .284 Brass Dimensions ? One is .284 Winchester Spec. are not being used by makers of Brass ?
