284W issue

IMHO your die is not sizing your brass down far enough, it doesn't take much. Try taking just a body die and resize a piece of brass that has the issue.
I also believe this is a die issue. I had a 6.5x284 that had bolt click so bad it was breaking extractors. After countless hours grinding down shell holders, using small base body dies, the culprit was a very small burr on the inside of the sizing die at the shoulder. One call to Redding and the problem was solved.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

A 284 reamer is available with straighter sides giving more grip and reliving the load on the small head. The name escapes me for now.(along with a lot of other stuff).

Interesting..... I haven't given up on idea of using a small base die. I bought a redding SB die a while back. I only sized one case that measured if memory serves me .496. seems me and dogcapper have the same ailgment.

If ya'll will allow me to rant for a moment, I made agoal this year to shoot at least 2 600 or 1K at two different clubs, Coolacres and Monatana , but know my riflr is brokdid and I dint know when I can get the the thing working if at all, if nit would yall let a very accurate LV 243 compete? Oh Kay, okay ill wipe the possum blood off of it, im kidding of course.
Gottogo, the Ambien is kicking in and when it kicks in it allways gets expensive, packages show up at the door a couple days later and the wifiey is not, Thanks to all the support, big D, if ur not a dallas fineim gonna be very disapointed
I'm a cheesehead at heart. Sorry. Lol. I don't rant n rave about football, that's working n hunting season! I'm sure your 243 will do just fine if you can keep it cool. As far as those packages coming to the door I know exactly what you are saying. I always tell myself i won't need anything for awhile and for some unknown reason the next week another package or 2 or 3 are sitting by my door again. Lol. It's a great disease to have. Glad I'm not alone!
As far as a new bolt handle I don't think you need to go that far since you already have one there, unless that's just a personal preference, and paint is another personal preference. Totally your choice. Function is always first in my opinion. Looks are always a plus but my old beater savages have taken down a few giants over the years that looked like Maserati built them. I've since sold them and went full throttle with a Kelby panda f class a BAT M and a fully tweaked Rem 700. My biggest complaint with the savage was there trigger options and the recoil lug when changing barrels. I hope I don't regret selling them. They both shot very well. 2017 hole punching season will answer that.

Its not your primary extraction. Think about it. Clickers come from the primary extraction cycle. If you didnt have any primary extraction you could not experience a click. If your cam wasnt giving any primary, you would open the bolt, but you could not pull it back. You need to tap the handle rearward to pop the case loose. Your issue is a sizing issue, assuming no scratches in the chamber. How much is the die reducing the diameter of the case just above the extractor groove? To check how much primary, remove the firing pin, close the bolt, measure the gap in front of the handle. Now open the bolt, and hold it up and forward against the cam, measure the gap again. The difference is the amount of cam your using. The ding is from slamming the bolt forward, usually on and empty chamber.

Just wanted to give an update. I discovered that when I did the initial extraction measurements that the firing pin needed to be released.
With the the firing pin dropped the two caming surfaces meet up nicely. I lightly filed the dimple on the bolt ramp just enough so I can't feel it when closing the bolt.
Just to verify I loaded 5 rounds sized w the SB die and 5 sized by the S die. I loaded all 10 w 55.1 g of 4831sc and took them to the range. The SB rounds functioned flawlessly and sure enough the rounds fired w the S die all were clickers.
So needless to say I think I have found the problem, small base body die from now on. Thanks a lot for everyone's suggestions and paitiance! E
