Clearence on muzzle brake/suppressor ?

What is the average clearance of the hole/s on them for .224 & .308's ?

I think .020" over bullet diameter is generally accepted as appropriate clearance when setting one up on the barrel. Average is a different story as I would assume off the shelf products are made with looser tolerances to account for poor alignment/improper installation. There has been a lot of discussion about how much this affects function.

.020 sounds good. I know some have had issues with clearance and hitting ( I guess) the edge of the hole and damaging or shooting the brake/suppressor of the barrel. Thanks.

I don’t know the answer to your question. My suppressors have QD mounts and I use all of them on more than one rifle. One of the suppressors has interchangeable end caps for different calibers but I just leave the one for the largest caliber I use it with installed because I don’t want to mess up. I’m not shooting any subsonic ammo and I always use muffs or plugs or both because there are other nearby shooters that are not suppressed, so I’m not too bothered by losing a few dB of suppression on the smaller calibers.

Just curious, as I read where some use a larger opening, i.e. 30 cal on their 224's and even 20 caliber, sort of like you say you use yours on different calibers.

A lot will bore out huge to account for faster alignment and setup time. You lose effectiveness very fast at more than .030 over bullet diameter. Not saying it doesnt still reduce recoil but its not as efficient as .020 over, on a proper setup, with a larger chamber inside between the crown and exit.

Yes you could. Check out how much sound increases per db increase. 129 and 132 is substantial. 3db increase doubles the intensity

Also, the installer needs to make sure they dial in the bore before cut and thread tenon.

YHM Phantom 30 cal. I use it on 6.5, 6mm, 223 and 20.
When i got it 5-14 I could not read the future.
Ar15 its earplug free but 6mm Rem i put them in loosely.
Earplugs: mowing, workshop, chainsaw, motorcycle riding, makes a difference.
