Cleaning Rods

I still like my coated Dewey rods. I’ve never had any issues with umpteenthousand rounds fired through my barrels over the last 6 years. The handles fit my hands good. The price is right. I don’t concern myself with the imbedded debris I hear about on this forum. I keep them clean. No issues.

I’ve been using bare stainless ProShot rods but always like to hear opinions of others. I used coated Dewey for years until I decided to run a fingernail up and down one once. I could feel embedded grit. That could well have been my fault for not wiping the rods down often enough. In my younger days I rushed things more than I do now.

A friend just recommended the Boretech rods and that got me thinking.

Dave.

I have a Dewey rod that I like a lot, and a Bore Tech that has lost some of its coating just in front of the handle where I did not properly dry the solvent in the area under a long bore guide inner bushing, before putting it away. Since that area does not touch the bore, that has not been a functional problem, just aesthetic. The nylon coating of the Dewey seems impervious to that sort of thing. I have other rods, but these are my go to pair, for brushing and patching.

I've been using pro shot stainless rods and have been satisfied with them but recently tried a bore tech for all the good reviews that I've heard. It was over $80 till I got it shipped and the aluminum insert in the end was several thousandths bigger in diameter then the rod, causing it to catch on the sharp edge of the crown as you pull it back through the barrel...really nice handle but otherwise I wasn't happy...maybe my experience was the exception but I'm back to using a Pro shot rod.

PRO SHOT hands down. Tried BoreTec hated them and the Brass female end is very delicate, the first two tries shipping from Brownells they were damaged and had to go back. used some Dewey's but I like the PRO SHOT better.

I have a pair of Deweys for almost 30 years, coating is still good. I have Pro Shot stainless and like them too.
I bought a pair of Bore Tech when they came out. Used them for a few months and the coating started to come off. I called them and was told too bad. Never bought another Bore Tech product again.

I have a Dewey but Ya' know what ?? I still keep and use my
3 and 4 piece aluminum rod in my range bag. Use it right, and
it's not a problem as some myths go.

Bore Tech, Pro Shot and Dewey, all work as designed, the Dewey rods have lost some of the coating on the rod, but I haven't detected any damage to the bore (20 cal rods)

Pro shot coated, but to do it again, I would try stainless. If fact I’m shopping for one now.

Dewey for me, but even more important is to always use a bore guide. Without it you chance damaging your barrel and/or the cleaning rod. In addition, the bore guide prevents solvents from possibly getting into the trigger.

Dewey (some are 30 years old and without problems) and Pro-Shot. Recent buys have gone to Pro-Shot stainless due to the smaller handle diameter.
