Cleaning Rod wont Spin

This is driving me crazy. I use Dewey Rods and each rod spins as it should. One for patching and one for nylon brushing. I clean after every 70-8o rounds its a 6 BRA, Brux with 300 rounds.Ive used Bore Tech product and wipe out… doesn’t matter if I patch or brush sometimes no spin.. sometimes some spins.. other times my brush or jag unscrews. Im new and this may be a stupid question… what do I need to do?

On a pro-shot rod I have unscrewed the rod from the handle and then put a section of a three piece rod in there. Put your drill on that section and spin it while oiling the handle insides.

Does it feel like it won’t turn freely if you grab it in two hands and turn it?
I’ve grabbed the rod itself and turned it to the right attempting to get the patch or brush to “set” into the lands and then pushed with the handle like I saw Speedy do in a cleaning video and the rods still doesn’t spin much when pushed through. Im worry Im pushing everything over the lands. I know the rod should turn.

Your concerns are valid. I never had issues with Dewy Rods, is it old? I have had the same problems with pro shot rods. So I really don’t use them anymore. However they make great bore patches. You might try blowing some compress air between the handle and shaft and then a few drops of light oil. See if that does it. I use Tipton rods. And there cheap enough to replace and light.

FWIW my Dewey is stuck too . No idea why. It used to spin on the handle, now is tight as a rock. Not bent, not dropped. Just stuck.

Ive contemplated soaking it in kerosene.

Just like anything else with a dry bearing or two, a douche with oil from time to time has kept my Deweys spinning freely for 3 or 4 decades now. Kroil &/or Rem Clean (with Teflon) is what I've used. It's thin enough to get down into the bearings quickly & with minimal fuss.

Does the handle spin on a center section, are you pressing on the center with your hand while the rod goes through the bore causing it to bind?

Thanks to another thread here somewhere I fixed my recalcitrant Dewey rod. It was one of those duhhh moments. Take the handle off and run a drill bit through the handle where the rod was. Ream out the hole so there's clearance between the handle and rod. Gunk gets in there and I think some solvents cause the handle to swell. At any rate, with a slight bit of clearance, the handle will rotate freely when you put it back together.

Dewey will sell you a new handle, I have replaced two on very old Dewey rods. The bearings on the older rods can wear out. The handles I replaced were on rods purchased 25-30 years ago.

You can modify a wide flat blade screwdriver to undo the retaining nut on the back of the handle to try what Krogen suggest. In my case the bearings were "brinneled" races had divots in them. Cleaning and clearencing the handle didn't solve my problem

I oiled up one of my Dewey rods, and was surprised at the amount of silvery grease that was washed out over the next few months. That stuff got everywhere. It did fix the rod, though; and now I can easily ID the jag rod from the brush rod by looking at the hub.

I’ve had some angled land 5R and 5C barrels that would occasionally not spin on the reverse stroke/pulling brush or jag back towards bore guide. More so on the old Broughton 5C barrels as I had a couple that would not spin a caliber correct nylon brush but would spin a bronze brush. I always take care and maintain my rods to ensure the handle spins freely. Bore Tech seems to have the most freely spinning of all the rods but I’m not big on coated rods. Although I kinda like the Montana Extreme rods as the coating on those seems very hard and doesn’t flake off as the Bore Tech rods do. I mostly use Ivy and Pro Shot polished steel rods but I wish they had handle that spun as freely as Bore Tech’s rod handles.

Also, if carbon is allowed to build from the throat forward for a few hundred rounds it’s possible for carbon to build Intelsat to the point of hiding the lands and a brush will not spin in the affected area…usually from the breech forward several inches. If you have this problem it’s because of lack of maintenance or you just thought you were cleaning your barrels or you relied on a clean patch as evidence of a clean barrel. Clean while barrel is hot, clean often, and clean every time you shoot the rifle, and don’t be afraid of bronze brushing. Not turning this into a cleaning thread, just giving another scenario of when a carboned up bore condition can cause a patched jag or brush to fail to spin. YMMV.

Great advise and info. Thanks
