Cleaning Rod -- one size fits all or specific caliber?

Do you recommend a specific Size cleaning rod? and why?
I currently have one Tipton carbon fiber that I use on 6.5CM, .308 WIN and on .223 with Tipton generic bore guide.

Thanks for your input.

Buy the stainless rods and POLISH the rod with 400/600.

Don't use the carbon fiber - they may break and definitely flex enough to rub on the bores.

Coated rods - great idea, but the coating does not always stay connected to the rod.

As divingin said, cut the sharp edges off of everything.

As Oleg S said, bore guides are a MUST! Really helps to preform the cotton patches before you hit the chamber.

Been using Dewey Coated Rods for as long as I can remember, been shooting and hunting for 50 years now and never had a problem with them. I never had the coating peel off any of mine. Never had any material embed in them either but I wipe clean after each pass which a good idea for any rod used.

I also use Dewey "no harm" bronze brushes that have brass core and are looped at the ends.

The Dewey bore guides also work quite well. They have rubber gaskets that prevent back flow of solvent into the chamber. Again, caliber group specific is the way to go.

Most definitely use caliber specific rods to prevent flex in the bore. For example, if you try to use a .224 rod in a 30 caliber bore, the rod will flex..

They now make rods with cooper solvent resistent furrules and jags - good idea if you use cooper solvent.

Yes, absolutely.

Used one of those generic, universal bore guides decades ago... and it's still in my gun cleaning box somewhere. But kinda like cheaping out on optics or scope mounts, after awhile you come to realize that you put all this money into a rifle and dies and components... and it doesn't make sense to not give that expensive rifle its due.

The first time you use a top-grade, correctly-sized cleaning rod with a quality, rifle-specific and caliber-specific bore guide is something of an epiphany. Doesn't make buying one-off bore guides for each rifle any less painful, but once you accept the wisdom that far more rifles are damaged by improper cleaning than by shooting... it gets a little bit easier.

The Delrin bore guides, like those from Possum Hollow, work great. I have a bunch of those.

The very best ones, though, are the two-piece models like those by Lucas and PMA Tool.

I use a 22 - 26 cal rod for both 6mm and 30. The 30 jags have to have the base ground down to the 22 caliber size, drimmil with old cheep rod works great.

Make sure to purchase the rod long enough for the bore guide and barrel length, takes a long rod for 26"+ barrel and guide. I have a custom made SS ball bearing handle rod for my .224's with varmint barrels and possum hollow guide(wish I had the combo for other rifles).
