Cleaning question

So, if you find a bore that's got heavy fouling but is reported to shoot well, what do you do?

Leave it alone except for a light cleaning?

Strip it all out?

Something else?

Thanks for looking.

So much depends on what you are using it for.
Shoots well is relative, means different things to different people..

1) shoot it yourself to see how it groups.
2) if it satisfies you, light cleaning.
3 if it doesn't satisfy you strip it all out

If it were mine, I would strip it all out, then shoot it, and keep it clean.

"Find a bore" ... "reported to shoot well" ... so I guess this is a gun that is handed to you, or one you buy?

Before I did anything else, I'd see if it shoots.

For rifles that shoot, like my SR, my "cleaning" consists of running one patch wetted with Ed's Red and GTG until it stops shooting. At that point I start looking at things like carbon ring, more aggressive cleaning, etc.

Well, I did strip it all out and found pitting under the fouling. A lot of it. So, now I'm second guessing my decision.

What we see in post #8 is what was under the copper and carbon. It was a 5 hour process to get it all out.

I would strip it out to see what's underneath. Not hard to get it dirty again.
Agreed, This ^^^^^
I'd go back to quare one with it since if it shoots well dirty
it may ONLY shoot well dirty
You can always dirty it back up easy enough :P
-------------------------------
Now what if you clean it slightly too much?, how dirty must it be again before it shoots well?
You will have to document carefully how many rounds until it shoots again and how many round before accuracy falls off. to give you a round count window of how many rounds you are able to shoot between cleanings
Again - this depends on its intended purpose, IE: Varmint gun vs Bench Gun
If its a bench gun ? - heck no!

Bench gun. Borden action. Fiberglass stock. 6br.
Hence my frustration.
Already 'stripped it out'. Given my experience with JB Bore Paste, if it won't take it out then it's not coming out.

Have you gauged throat wear yet? IE: are you able to reach the lands with a bullet still in the neck?
