Cleaning After N570

I picked up some VV N570 and decided to try some loads in my 338 Edge. Without a lot of work, I nailed a really good load. However, I'm finding N570 to be the dirtiest fowling powder I've ever used. I always use Accelerator and Wipe Out to clean my rifles, but it seems like it takes forever to get the barrel clean. I run patch after patch after patch and they continue to come out with some amount of black on them. Any secrets to speed up the cleaning of a really dirty barrel?

Any slow double based powder is going to run dirty. N570 is extra slow. Double based powders in general run dirtier. Unless, you have them up near the max pressure of that powder in that case.
Added: when running slow powders, sometimes the powder won't go off fast enough to beat the brass sealing to the chamber. The pressure won't seal the case before some gas escapes. In which case you would want to look at a slightly faster powder. Are you shooting in the cold right now, or is it still warm where you are at? The reason I ask is while VV powders are very consistent in a given temp, they are very temp sensitive across wider temperatures, as they don't use a burn retardant.

Adding in some Thoroclean will work far faster than just Wipe Out and Accelerator. I have all of them and have tested it.

Its cool here. I've been shooting in the high 30's to mid 50's. The bottle sez its temp stable. I read an article by Shawn Carlock where he was testing N570 in a 338 Edge and found it to be temp stable. Figured I'd see how it performs. I'll take a look at Thoroclean.

My 300 prc likes it dirty.

I cleaned after hundred rounds after hunting season. It took ten shots to get impact back to being consistent.

I use bore tech cleaner. Wet patches until clean, bronze brush 20 strokes and repeat process 3 times.

With the 5 series from VV I've found that it "cleans up" with higher pressure. If you're already near that, you may want to look at a slightly faster powder.

I shoot quite a bit of 5 series, CLR (or what ever you prefer) and a brush

I use 570 in my cheytac and it is some dirty stuff. Been using accelerator and tactical advantage, usally after 3-4 soakings after work it comes out clean enough

I have a shelf full of many cleaners, but Freeall has by far done the best job for me. The first couple of patches will look like black gel, then soaking overnight will loosen carbon enough to reduce the need for Iosso.

I've never tried any VV powder, but I tried 6.5 Staball in my 7mm/08 . The accuracy, velocity, and s.d. were great, BUT when it comes to cleaning it's the dirtiest powder I ever used. I push a few patches thru with Butches' bore shine, dry patch, then Wipeout, and let it soak overnight, push another few patches then Wipeout again. It sure is time consuming but that's what it seems to take to get my barrel clean.

Woah. That last part kinda scares me. Is that 40 per cent number fact based or opinion based. Not doubting your words, just really would like to know.

It has a Powder heat potential of 4000 which is high. By comparison H 1000 has a PHP of 3630. Not sure about the 40% but harder on the throat than most others.

Yup, as you go up in that number, depending on how hot you load, the wear goes up exponentially.

N570 is great powder but it will definitely toast a throat faster than some others. It’s a trade off if your gun loves it like mine did.

Was told by Shawn Carlock of Defensive Edge, the guy who invented the .338 Edge. He exclusively runs H1000 which is I believe the coolest burning of the slow magnum powders, cleanest, and very temp stable.

I have run n570 is a few different cartridges. Mainly my 338 Lapua imp. I keep the barrels cool and clean often. Never noticed it to be dirty or hard on barrels. I dont buy 40% less than h1000 at all. In fact the lapua imp with 570 is better on throats than many more common cartridges not consideted to be barrel burners.
