Classifieds: Is it somehow NOT clear??

Jay Christopherson

Not An Admin
I guess this is just one of those things that will have to be periodically repeated, because it seems like it keeps coming back. This is not solely limited to new members either - members who have been around for a while and know better, are guilty as well:

DO NOT POST DEROGATORY FEEDBACK ON SOMEONE'S CLASSIFIED AD!

Period.

- it doesn't matter if you don't agree with their price
- it doesn't matter if you think what they are selling is somehow below your standard of quality
- it doesn't matter if you think are protecting the forum at large by policing the classifieds
- it doesn't matter "if they did it to you" or if they've previously been rude to you
- it doesn't matter if it's their first post ever and they want $1211.77 for a used R700 action and want to send you $237,211.77 via Western Union, and are willing to let you keep an extra $5000 for just transferring the rest back to Nigeria

If an ad strikes you as wrong somehow, just report the thread and someone (usually the Forum Boss) will look at it and make the call.

Other than that, if you aren't buying or vouching for the the seller/product, then DON'T POST ANYTHING.

I solved the problem on my cigar board by changing the settings on the the trading board to posts by thread starters only. You can't post "I'll take it" but it saved me from suspending lots of guys who just could not contain themselves.

yeah, that's been a thought and that may end up having to be done at some point.

I noticed the last few days there's been some weird uncalled for stuff going on in the classifieds. Thanks Jay for putting this out there..

Its been going on in the classifieds and if anyone hasn't noticed that it is going on in almost every thread lately. I posted a simple question about a bald eagle gun bag and it turned into a Shiraz bashing. It is Christmas, why all the angst?

Designate a few volunteer moderators to keep any eye on the bad mouthers, etc. Implement a 3 strike rule?

Does this forum support a infractions point system? Can one be added?

Its to bad the old ad software for classifieds that
most all boards use to have is gone.
The seller had to post his contact info, for the
buyers, while the ad was closed to posting
to all except the seller.

I think it is uncalled for when a sales ad gets
turned into a chat thread, sometimes getting
completely off topic. All sales conversations
should be handled off board.

Since we are stuck with what we have, the rule
should be, if you are not a buyer, DONOT
POST. LDS

Said it once and i'll say it again, this forum has a very pleasant, mature and relaxed atmosphere, even my self as a newbie does not mind posting "new experiences" without fear of getting verbally bashed. I commend all of you forum higher ups for staying right on top of the internet loud mouths. PLEASE do not let this forum follow down the road like the "other" loudmouthed bashfest "S/H".... ;)

Thanks again for your quick attention efforts !

+1 to Road_Clam. the overall civility of this site is the main reason I sent a donation to the site the other day.

Great information here presented professionally for the most part.

TTT for a little while.

Disabling replies to Classifieds is something that we could do. I haven't talked to the Forum Boss about it so I don't know what his feelings are regarding the subject, although I suspect he probably is tired of having to police classified ads as well. Cuts down on his ability to put out the content that people want to see.

The downside of disabling replies, as I see it, is that it's going to result in a flood of PM's to the poster, asking for information or clarification and in many cases, will be people sending questions about the same thing. The poster could roll those up and post an open reply on his thread, but it still adds a lot of burden to the poster to manage it the PM flood. Which I'm mostly ok with... :-)

Personally, I like being able to ask a question about something I'm considering buying. And to be clear it's a relatively small percentage of people who feel the need to play classifieds cops. I hate the notion of losing functionality (in any walk of life, not just our classifieds) because a few people can't restrain themselves.

My shooting range just ran the entire membership through the whole 2 hour orientation session again because a few people couldn't follow the rules. It was a pain in the butt having to blow a Saturday morning because a couple of dimwits (out of 1000 membership) couldn't get right. I look at this as the same thing - a few people can't get right and are close to making it a pain for all.

Jay, on my board I have very few rules, but one thing that is concrete is that you break my rules the first time you get a week suspension, the second time it's a month and after that it's permanent.

Even before the change to posting settings that kept it pretty well in line. The other thing I did to make sure the message was getting out was to edit the offending post to:

banned.gif
One week, Rule 7 violation

Made it pretty clear to everyone. Everyone knew the rules, it was consistently applied to everyone on the board. (never forget the sound of one of my friends on the phone..."you banned me!?")

[quoteDimwit, is a pretty poor choice of words Jay :-[ I would have expected more from you! Some are slow learners, some not very attentive. Belittling them doesn't help!

It is, at times, more often than not, that others need to help with the rules that they might not be familiar with. There are some ads, right now, that need to be "policed", which again, is a bad choice of words.][/quote]

That's funny stuff. Isn't it sad that the pu$$ification of America has led us to find humor in things like this? 20+ years ago nobody would've even thought about ribbing a guy for using the terms "dimwit" or "policing".

It is, at times, more often than not, that others here need to help with the rules that some might not be familiar with. There are some ads, right now, that need to be "policed", which again, is a bad choice of words. And those who are non contributing members here should have no say in the matter!

I stand by my comments in this context. The majority of violators, by far, are repeat offenders. IMO, there's no excuse for repeat offending here. This isn't algebra, or geometry, or physics, or chemistry with gray areas, or subject to learning curves or attention spans. This is a simple common sense equation, backed up by forum policy. If you have to be notified, even once, that should be the end of it.

The question anyone should be asking themselves before posting on a classified is: "do I have any intention of buying this"? If the answer is NO, then *don't post*. The only exception I can think of is if you intend to post a note vouching for the seller or product being sold.

It always seems that when one particular sponsor posts here threads like this gets started. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Once I saw the thread right away one vendor came to mind and sure enough I went to see and there it was. My opinion is if there is "constructive"negative feedback to be shared it should be allowed.

I'm sure I'll get hammerd for that last statement but it is what it is. If it walks like a duck and quacks like one then it probably is one.
