I took the 20br out and finally shot the 40 vmaxs,40 Berger, and the 40BIBs side by side. The vmax went the fastest followed by the BIBs the Berger was the slowest of the group all the same load of Fed205m primers and 31.0 N540 were used. I guess the bearing surface of the different bullets while not that different does matter. The vmaxs went 4086 on average while the Bergers and BIBs were right at 4000fps.I wouldn't want to live on the difference as far as accuracy goes they all knotted them up very nicely. Next trip I will test seating depth and shoot at 300 yards for a better evaluation.

What’s the barrel length on your rifle?

27" Tommie didn't you have a 20BRX? Always thought that made a lot of sense as the BRX in 6mm was a long range performer that my friend in Idaho really liked a lot.

I do have a 20BRX for 55 Bergers but built a 20BR for 40's. Haven't gotten a load worked up yet. The barrel is 26" but I'm still hoping to hit 4,000 FPS. The 500 series VV powders are the easy button for velocity but I want to try other options before going that route. Have you tried any other powders?

Not yet I have a bunch of the newer formulation N150 that I might try. The load im using with the N540 was from awhile ago and always worked well,it's fairly mild and the primer pockets are still good. I've since learned the 500 series of powders have a fairly high flame temp so im onto the 100 series, perhaps N140 would be good for the 40s.

Holy smokes, that's a rifle indeed. What twist rate is your barrel?
It's an early Lilja, at the time 12 twist is all they offered. Lots more choices today. I've beat to death the idea of a 48 grain BlitzKing or vmax but I still think it would have great speed and terminal effect on small varmints at distance. Until then I will shoot the 55 Berger in my 9 twist 20 Dasher.

Yeah the flame temp thing has me a little worried at high volume shoots.

Ever think about doing a nose-ring cut with Tubb cutter? Like Sierra is doing on some of the 115gr 6mm? I bet it would make that bullet open up much more dramatically! To be fair, I haven't tried it, so I dont have first hand knowledge

What a crow bomber! I wld think those 40’s at that speed wld have good affect. Years back I shot a lot of crows w 204r. I tested all the bullets on em. Best was 39gr bk. 32’s did great. 39 tnt really popped em too. Maybe I should revisit the 40gr vmax again now that I have a cpl 11tw 20’s.

100%
I also gave up on the dream of a 48-52 grain 20 caliber varmint bullet. I bought some heavies from a couple boutique bullet makers but I wasn't convinced the bullet construction was frangible enough for prairie dogs - plus there was the price factor. Years ago there was a rumor floating that Sierra had dies made for a 50 grain Blitzking but never went anywhere with it. But again I still believe that was simply rumor.
