chatter while using pusher to drive reamer

if I drive the reamer with a center I don't get any chatter whatsoever. when I use the pusher (very simple like many of you use on here similar to a bald eagle) I always get chatter. I prebore all of my chambers and leave .015-.025 for the reamer to cut. any ideas?

Chuck,

I use the same reamer holder. It will chatter until the throat of the reamer is fully engaged in the cut, then the chatter will go away. I would leave at least .250 depth to finish the chamber to depth. It also helps to cut this part of the chamber by hand and not under power. Good luck. ;D

paul,

i do leave .100 or so depth to finish the chamber depending on the cartridge. some will be closer to .250 depending on the length of the case. i also know that the chatter goes away after you engage the last of the cut where the whole reamer is working. it just seems that with the reamer chattering it would be MUCH more likely for you to trap a chip somewhere on the reamer put a nice ring in the chamber. i never finish a chamber by hand because its impossible for me know exactly how much i am cutting. if i drive with the tail stock i know where i am at with an indicator (i have proven to myself that the dial on my tail stock is quite accurate and a dial indicator really isn't necessary). the only chamber i cut too deep was one i finished by hand! that's a lot of exta work ESPECIALLY if its a fluted barrel that was timed!!!!is there any way you could post a short video of the chatter you experience so i know if mine is abnormal or not? by the way, my "pusher" is just like what mike Bryant shows on his site. i use a Sinclair neck turning handle to hold the reamer and push against with the "pusher". i think that perhaps i am overly critical of just about everything i do!

Chuck,

I start the reamer by hand while pushing with the tailstock till it quits jumping around. Then I put the power to it. I finish the chamber-last .010 by hand-while pushing with tailstock while watching the indicator. Hope that makes sense. ;D

It does. How much chatter do you experience prior to the neck/shoulder area of the reamer engaging barrel steel?

Chuck, you are not overly sensitive, chatter is not normal and should not be encountered at all when reaming a chamber. If chatter is common with a pusher, try a different method.

Chuck.

It is bad enough to make me fear breaking the reamer. Try starting by hand,, like I have described, as it is very controllable. Once you get past the start this method
has cut the best chambers for me. Far better that anything I have tried in the past. Good luck and let me know how it goes. ;D

Happy Holidays.

Chuck,

You shouldn't be getting any chatter at all. But from the way it sounds your reamer doesn't have the support it needs to get started correctly.

Pre-drill with a drill bit approximately .020" smaller than shoulder diameter on reamer. Drill .100" short of depth. Now bore the drilled hole to within .010" or a little less than shoulder diameter.

Now go the very rear of your bored hole. This needs to be stepped and opened up to .001"-.0015" bigger than shoulder diameter. I go about .200" deep with this step. This will give your reamer some support to get started.

I always drive the reamer with my dead center for about the first half of the chamber, then switch over to my floating/pusher reamer holder.

I have not encountered chatter yet with this method, even with a couple of Lothar Walther barrels that i chambered up in 375 H&H

Hope this helps.

Any chatter is a sign of bad juju. Have you tried using a finish reamer without pre boring? Use a coolant flow, keep your feed rate up and use your finisher for the entire project. Flame suit on

I dont use a flush system but tried different rpm being 65 to 180. Chatter was less with faster RPM. I am going to do the next one as suggested by pushing with the dead center for the dirst half of the chamber and finishing up with the pusher.
