Charles Benjamin “Chuck” Mawhinney Rest In Peace

Chuck actually surpassed the KIA count of Carlos. He was both a gentleman and master sniper.
His LR shooting school was tip-top also, he'll be sorely missed in the community.
RIP Chuck.

Was he not interview by Precision Shooting Magazine?? Any one have a link to that??

Marine's deadliest sniper: The US Marine Corps' deadliest sniper, Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney, who went nearly two decades avoiding any recognition for his kill record until it was revealed in a book, has died.
Mawhinney died at his home in Baker City, Oregon, on Feb. 12, t he Baker City Herald reported.
For the longest time, the world believed the record belonged to another Marine Corps legend, Carlos Hathcock, and his 93 kills. During Chuck Mawhinney's tour in Vietnam, he racked up a confirmed kill count of 103, with 216 more probables.
Senich wrote an article about Mawhinney's tour and his kill record for the December 1996 issue of Precision Shooting Magazine, an interview that changed Mawhinney's life.
Mawhinney had left the Marine Corps in 1970…

I had been watching YouTube videos of hunting last night and out pops one about the 10 greatest snipers of all time, ranked 1-10. I couldn't pass that up. They talked separately about the American snipers. Of the 3 Vietnam era snipers of notariety, Chuck Mawhinney was #1 I think, and Hathcock was #3 and I don't recall who was #2. I had never heard of Mr. Mawhinney or the other man until then. Sad to see the news today of his passing today.

Chuck also ran a successful LR shooting school near his home in Baker City, OR.

This is a card he had available at the school:

And the logo hat from the school also:

I'm of the thought that with all the combat in the sand box over the past two decades, more of these very talented gentlemen will surface and their stories be told. Sure hope so.

It already started with Chris Kyle. Got really big after he was murdered. I'm sure there are others, however, I doubt if any will be as humble about it as Mawhinney.

I will never be able to call it anything other than Baker. Who's idea was it to rename the town?

He was born in Lakeview, which, having been through it many times, I find interesting.

Mawhinney sometimes carried a starlight-scoped M14, as related by Lloyd Billingsley:

One night the sniper took his M14 rifle, equipped with a Starlight scope, and positioned himself where an NVA (North Vietnamese Army) column crossed a river.

"As soon as the first one started up the bank on our side, I went to work,” Mawhinney recalled, “I got 16 rounds off that night as fast as I could fire the weapon, every one of them were headshots. They were dead center.” The NVA troops never cross the river and years later Mawhinney still wondered “what their company commander’s report was of what happened to them.”
