Shooting from the hip.

Imagine shooting from a rapidly moving platform at another rapidly moving platform in a 3 dimensional space without the aid of heads up displays or radar or seeking devises. Imagine further that you're aiming guns that are 10 or more feet away positioned at hip level or lower. Now that's good shooting. From the hip shooting at its best.

One of those who was very good at it was a WWII ace named Chuck Yeager. Chuck famously went on to become the fasted man in the world as he broke the sound barrier in the Bell X1. He was 24 years old at the time. He passed at the age of 97 today.

If I recall correctly, the gunsight on a WWII fighter was a rudimentary heads-up display. A bulb shone through a reticle, and projected on an angled piece of glass inside the windscreen. Most planes would also have ranging bars (adjustable vertical lines that would be set to the wingspan of the aircraft you expected to shoot; fill the space between the bars with the wingspan, and you knew your guns would converge at that distance.)

To be fair, windage and lead, and any ranging would have to be done by eye.
