"The Oregon House of Representatives has unanimously passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 28, a bipartisan tribute to Charles Benjamin “Chuck” Mawhinney, the U.S. Marine Corps greatest marksman."

It's a good read, please take the time.

YAAAYYY!!! Eastern Oregon guys grow up shooting distance, and there's a lot of distance to shoot.

Great to see even the libtards in the Legislature putting their stamp on this one.

I've undoubtedly shared dirt tracks and sunsets with this fella over the years -- maybe even met him; but never heard his story till now. Imma have-ta get that book. Thanks for posting this. jd

Most excellent!

I'm stunned our lib legislature did honor Chuck, but glad he's getting this recognition, as it's very well deserved.

Chuck was a very unassuming sort of fella. You'd never guess his past role in RVN when meeting him, as he was just 'one of us', a regular sort of guy.

For some years Chuck ran a LR shooting school there in ID. This is a hat from that endeavor that tells a tale:

Chuck, along with Carlos are two real American hero's who stood tall, answered the call in grand fashion with dignity and honor. We are truly diminished with these two gentlemen gone. RIP guys.

Many of Carlos Hatchcock's kills were not witnessed by an officer and are not confirmed kills. He was never after a reputation or notoriety and never cared about the count. But that should not diminish Chuck Mawhinney's accomplishments in the least. But as for count Adelbert Waldron an Army guy had the most Vietnam kills. I think they all deserve more praise than they get.

IMHO, very few officers would have gone out into the jungle with Hathcock on a sniping recon unless directly ordered to do so. Or any other Officer assigned to a small unit.

In my three tours, we had six officers. Only one, volunteered to go out with six man teams on 3-4 days "Snoop & Poop" recons. My 2nd tour, we got a 1st Lt who had actually gone thru Paratrooper and Ranger Schools, and our little three week in-country Recon training. At the time, we had seven six-man Teams. He went out (we were on a weekly rotation) every week in rotation with a different team. Half the teams were out at one time. The seventh doubled up to make a 12-man "Heavy"; what we called a Hunter/Killer recon each week. We each had a code name, no saying "Fred Jones, over" on the radio. He was "Jumping Jack Flash". Only West Pointer I ever saw out in the Bush on a regular basis. He packed an M177, the little CAR-16. He would even take Point on rotation. First Officer that earned a CIB I ever heard of.
