Toby, 1 thing you will notice, the smaller the state with a good size population>>>public land is way down. However, out west it is just the opposite, with 1 GIANT exception>>TEXAS. Texas is huge and the vast majority of the land is privately owned. This stems from W-A-Y back when everything was given away during the settlement of Texas. Many of the ranches in Texas, especially in far West Texas, are very expansive. I was hunting Mule Deer on the Lonesome Valley Ranch outside of Sanderson, it was 25,000 acres>>>however, it was dwarfed by The Slaughter Ranch, which bordered us and was 88,000 acres! So because of the limited public lands, many, many hunters in Texas DO GO on those lands and they become "small cities" during Deer season. It is also the reason why leases are a HUGE priority when going "for real" hunting in Texas..

"State War Games Land"! LOL!! I do understand what you mean.. The last year I went to Sam Houston, a group of guys drove in the Friday before the opener. We had already set up camp and were peaceably making dinner. They were out of sight but close enough to hear them shooting. Just about dark, the shooting started. From the sound of the guns, I would guess maybe 7-10 "hunters". The BLASTING was like a war and lasted past 1a.m. in the morning! There would not have been any deer after that for at least 2 counties! I gave up and started leasing land! Much better! So I sympathize with you!
Anti libtards running everything out?

In my junior year in high school, I took a J.C. Higgins .22 semi-auto to school for my public speaking class and gave a demo on disassembly and cleaning. We had a female teacher and the only thing she asked was if it was loaded. Walked to school carrying the gun case, put it in my locker and went to class with it later in the day. Talk about changing times. Today, it'd be swat teams and live coverage on CNN!
We always had guns in the cars so we could hunt after school. A lot of teachers knew and would come and ask you to see it. They also knew who carried pocket knives and ask from time to time to borrow it. Yes times have changed. Matt

I'm thinking about Ireland, where if you want to fish a free-flowing stream, you have to pay whomever owns the rights to the fish in that stream.

I am sorry for making that statement without knowing the leval of your program.
I was referring to the life time holders of this.
Whit

There is a down side to living in a state or county where the majority of land is public land. You are missing the revenue that would ordinarily paid by property taxes on privately owned land.

These revenues were originally obtained by things like grazing permits and fees, timber sales, and probably mining fees. (not sure)

The environmental protection movement has been able to almost obliterate these uses of our public land, often without any scientific benefit for humans or wildlife. This has taken counties like mine, and thrown them into poverty.

You want to live in the western Great Basin, be prepared to take a considerable cut in pay, and have under funded schools and public services. jd

I LIVE IN WESTERN NEW YORK(BORN AND RAISED) AND VERY FEW WOULD TURN A WOOODCHUCK HUNTER DOWN BUT DEER NOW IS GETTING EXTREMELY HARD TO GAIN PERMISSION. Sorry caps was on but I might as well give it up and sell all my rifles because being disabled I could never ever afford a lease.

I live/work on family farm here in MI... we do not lease our land but it's just good friends and family that hunt... however .. it is mainly just my dad and I ( grandpa will still drive some tractor he's 82) if we need help we can call and they will come and work... and don't expect to get paid... so it's some times in our favor... we have been approached by several people to lease for hunting .. but if I told family and friends they would pb all chip in $100 bucks and call it good ( if it came to that) but if I'm not that desperate for money for the farm than I would rather just see everyone have fun ...

This Land was paid for by Hard Ass Work That's all I have to say
Is that not how most of the land here was bought! At least in the old days. My great grandfather had a couple of bad harvests Due to weather and lost the family farm. Went up to Columbus Ohio and they worked there asses off for three years and came back and bought it back. It stayed in the family for years but the ones older than me got ahold of it and slowly sold it off. Such a shame!! I was told my whole life how important it was that i learned to work it because some day it would be mine.
