Chamber reamer cleaning

So how do you guys without a flush system clean everything between cuts?? I am planning on eventually building a flush system but not there yet. I plunge my reamer at first .100". Then down to .050" and then do .025" passes. In between passes I brush off the reamer and use compressed air. I also blow some air from the muzzle side and use q tips. When I use the bore scope I toss in some rubbing alcohol to fully clean the chamber. Just looking to see if I can find another way besides flush system. Thanks

When not using a flush system. Brush swarf off with acid brush, swish in can of solvent, blow off with air. I also unashamedly ripped off Dave Tooley for a capture system on the off side of the headstock when blowing out the barrel with air from the chamber side. 5 gal bucket with a lid. Vertical PVC tube (2"OD?) with a 90* fitting at the top. Build it with the 90* at headstock height and align it over the end of barrel. Captures everything that gets blown out the end of the barrel.

Alex I try and use a paper towel to catch whatever the compressed air blows out of the barrel or off the reamer, works pretty well

I've been atomizing oil and sucking it down for over fifty years. Oil, varsol, gasoline, diesel, sawdust, I've inhaled it all. Today, at 75, I notice I don't have the stamina I used to have, but I think that's kind of normal. I run a hill behind the house and I'm definitely slower than I was 10 years ago.
I just recently posted up a video where I atomize the hell out of some Rigid NuClear and inhale same. Seriously, it makes sense to use caution and protect yourself. A paint mask might be a good idea. WH

To each his own. I think a lot depends on volume. Are you doing 1 a day or 5 a day? Once its an issue its kind of too late.

Will, I have been in a machine shop since I was 15 years old. You can imagine how much black sulphurized cutting oil I have blown into the air through the years.

But Alex is right. It is not a bad idea to avoid inhaling much of the stuff us older guys have breathed in.

I don't mean to sound too flippant, but I've truly been around the block. There are some cases where I was truly concerned and would take precautions. I don't doubt that some of the chemicals and solvents would scare hell out of me if I read the label. Hell, I think all of them cause cancer in California rats.
Now, regarding the use of air, I think it's a good idea to turn the regulator down a bit. It's probably also a good idea to rig up an exhaust fan over the lathe.
I have to say, your opinion, weighted toward the side of caution, is probably better heeded than mine. Some of us more mature guys get to thinking we are bulletproof. WH

I stopped using air a long time ago. You do not want to be putting this stuff in the air your breathing. Im not the safety guy at all, but you cant do that for long before it gets you and it probably still will. Just brush it off or wipe it off with a paper towel.
Correct Alex.nothing in life is free.have now and pay later.

Im not using a flush system on my old Southbend Heavy 10.

I dip reamer in a plastic jar of mineral spirits after my cuts and swish it around.

99 % of the chips fall off too the bottom of that jar!
Every precaution you can take is important! After years in the trucking industry, mostly in the shop . Every clutch job, brake job and engine overhaul, I have no doubt it all played a part in my cancer. Dr. Said smoking but the more I think about it all the asbestos and solvent had to have had some effect. A covid mask would be a minimum precaution.

I am still pretty bad. Small shop, no ventilation, I dont use gloves or masks, ext. Brake cleaner on my skin daily for 25+ years. Some of it you cant avoid and you cant mess around too much if you want to get anything done in the shop. But quitting the air was easy, less mess and its not black when I blow my nose anymore, lol. Thanks to Bidenomics I need to work for about 100 more years before I can retire...

Alex are you using brake cleaner instead of air too blow out the chamber after machining?
