Cerakote over Devcon?

My Stiller Diamondback action was supplied with a couple of bitty little aluminum scope bases that don't fit the receiver top well enough to inspire confidence in a rock solid mount - bottoms weren't concave enough.

These bases are in the white presently. My plan is to bed them to the receiver top using Devcon (steel bearing). I'll apply enough so that there is some ooz-out then remove them and trim the flash flush with the edges. I'd like to Cerakote these bedded bases black but am not certain if the 300 degree temps of the cure oven will compromise the Devcon and cause it to sugar - leaving me back where I was to start with.

Anyone have experience doing Cerakote over Devcon?

If you only want to do the bases, why not use Brownells Aluma-Hyde 2? I used it on the .358 Win I just built, coated the entire stock and barreled action, and it appears to be a good product. I had actually painted a piece of plate steel to see how durable it was, and it's very tough stuff, especially considering it came out of a spray can.

Aluma Hyde 2 only requires 90 degrees F to cure fully, so no risk of damage to the Devcon. I have a wooden cabinet I built for a curing oven and use a space heater to keep it at 90-95 degrees, works great.

You could also lap the bases to the action as well by applying a piece of self adhesive sand paper to the action and lapping the bases on it for a better fit. You may still desire to bed them, but it won't require near as thick a layer of Devcon as it would without lapping them.

I have never heated Devcon that much myself, I had always thought that much heat would start to break the bond of the Devcon to whatever it was applied to.

Good luck, I hope you figure out a solution to this. The Aluma Hyde 2 is worth a look though, it's really nice stuff and easy to work with.

That option is open, and I could simply trace around the edges with a felt pen and blacken the .010" thickness of grey devcon. I'd rather sand the devcon flush and coat over it though. Would look better.

And why not add black dye to the Devco, to match?

You could always just hit the bases with black Aluma Hyde so you don't need to bake those. I doubt there will be enough of a difference in color to notice between the Aluma Hyde and Cerakote. Aluma Hyde is available in many colors, I'm sure you can get a really close match. Then you won't need to worry about baking the Devcon, and the bases will match the rifle. You can also dye the Devcon black as has been stated already.

nomo,
I assume you you do not want to use the C series Cerakote?
You can cure H series at 250 for 2 hours and I've had it work as low as 200 for 3 hours.
