cerakote a bat action

anyone here ever cerakote a bat benchrest action? will the cerakote be to thick? if i go this route i will only coat the action and not the bolt. , my action is a bat 3 lug. i talked to a place called falcon gun coating, and he said no problem, im just not so sure. i want my stainless action to be black. lee

I don't have a bat, nor do I have first hand knowledge, but I thought Bat offered salt bath nitriting as an option - that would make it black.

Send it back to Bat and have them melonite it. Not only will it be black but it wil increase the surface hardness and make it much smoother and less likely to gall.

A friend of mine just got his BAT back. Long story short....The Melonie job had some flaws in it....they tried to buff the color out, which you really can't do, but the result was an absolutely beautiful two tone action. They showed him the action before they offered to redo it. The bolt was Black and the action was much lighter and shiny. GORGEOUS!!! He said to leave it as is!! It sounds like BAT is going to start trying to duplicate the result (not the process that got them there, of course).

I may not be 100% accurate on the story, but am 110% positive that the result was AWSOME!!

melonite is on my mind for a solution, i am just not sure it will be the finish i am really after. I also just dont see how these actions dont warp from the temp this melonte is done at. 900 degrees will move steel. no ifs, ands, or butts. 900 degrees is dam hot!!

Why take the chance on screwing up a beautiful action by applying some mickey mouse coating which may or may not come out like you want? Just enjoy it like it is.

Lee, for whatever it's worth I just got 2 actions back (700 SA & XP-100) from being Melonited, both had PT&G oversized bolts installed that were not done, and when they came back the bolts slid in and out of the receivers as good as they ever did, so I see no warping problems..
I'm pretty sure that BAT would not do them if it caused a problem...

Melonite is not a coating. It is also not mickey mouse. Bat wouldn't do it if it were a problem. Stiller uses it on some of his products. The military uses a lot of melonite on barrels.

I guess I just need someone to help calm my nerves a bit. I can't help but think 900 degrees would warp the steel in the action. Maybe I am just uninformed about the hole process?

I do cerakote on firearms and there are a few things to keep in mind when cerakote finishing. The areas to receive the finish must be blasted and will never look the same again. Also cerakote is a coating not a treatment, so it can not be applied to areas where fit is a consideration. I personally wouldn't ceracote a Bat action, save the cerakote for that old 870 with all the blueing wore off.

Preacher , what outfit did the Melonite process? I am thinking about doing a new a barrel later on; if done right I see no downside to process.

I have a custon Borden 223 rifle who was cerakoted and shot just fine. On other side, I have a Custon 308 Bat who was cerakoted at same time in same place that refuse to shot well. I already changed the barrel the second time and nothing improved. As the gunsmith work seems just fine, I decided remove the cerakote inside the action and will see what happens.

Cerakoted inside the receiver? I would be concerned if you say they cerakoted the bore. All it could possibly do in the receiver would tighten the tolerance.
