Centerfire Barrel Tuners/ Muzzle Devices

My biggest problem is that none of them read flags.

Boyd that pretty well sums it up. I definitely suffer from this condition

Boyd Allen answered it best. If you have a very good tuned rifle the tuner adjustment couldn't be measured. My testing I find40 % change. With a good shooting gun you can make it 40 % worse also. I try to get my SD under 5 with no vertical and use the tuner for the rest. Why would anyone shoot 500 rounds to tune a gun. Bench rest shooters just screw on a new one. My self I take a good barrel and put a tuner on it. I don't expect a long range gun to shoot in the .075. Vertical is the biggest killer I find at long range. Low SD and speed usually helps that. testing at the club you shoot at helps. In Florida where we shoot we have in the fall and winter n w n ne summer se s sw we also have no wind with terrible marriage. We shoot a little west of north. I can take a tuner and adjusts out with success 1/2''if vertical or horizontal. If you go to Bostrom Guns you can see what we have found. Tuners to me is for someone that has a good shooting that want to make them better. Larry

Is a tune miss different then not reading wind flags? Larry
Absolutely! Apples and oranges..It doesn't matter if tuned to perfection, by load and/or tuner method, if you miss a switch, the bullet won't go where you want it to.

...and you may note that several tuners used by successful shooters have rubber damping elements...

Boyd, I agree - the most notable in terms of success being Gene Bukys (as you know, just stating for the benefit of the wider audience).

However it was interesting for me to note the equipment used by Charles Huckeba for his WBC 12 win. Charles had a tuner on his primary and spare barrel that resembled a Bukys tuner, but in Charles case neither tuner had any rubber. The top two shooters at the WBC used a tuner of very similar design, although one had no rubber, and the other did have rubber. Also the number 4 competitor also used a tuner, albeit a different design again (and no rubber).

Actually I just took another look at the 2 Gun individual results from WBC 12, and from memory, 5 of the top 10 shooters were using tuners - 2 shooters using a Bukys style with rubber, the other 3 no rubber (2 different designs).

Nothing conclusive in any of that, but I thought it was relevant to the discussion.

Factory guns were competitive two years ago. When they change barrel the went to after market.
Several still use the factory stocks. Triggers are the red blade stock target action. I have along with several others have SSS 2oz trigger . But my preference is the red blade re worked. Bolts most are stock some have the kiff bolt face .I do rework the bolt to smooth it out not as good as a bat but close My guess 60% are using ras tuner brake. The stock I use is just like a savage description (ugly)
The fore end was too short. So Erick machine two 5/8 stainless rods in the front and one in 3/4 rod back it is not bedded only on pillars. My guess is 80 % of the time I can move it to the stop and never change the rest. No our guns aren't factory their savage customs. Larry

If we are looking at match results alone, I agree, but I have shooting experience that has convinced me that there are advantages to using rubber as part of a tuner, that are not directly related to the overall principle of a simple adjustable weight.

Have you tried just putting rubber around a barrel, without tuner? Maybe its effect is independent of whether a tuner is employed.
