Was messing around with tourqe settings on my stiller 2500XR this afternoon and had screws tourqed at 60 inch pounds was getting vertical stinging not very consistent grouping with SK long range two different lots not doing all that great . Started going down and groups went down and more horizontal . Finally went down to 45inch pounds and shot five Center X just for the heck of it ! Going to leave it there and see what happens with other SK. Ammo . Barrel is a Shilen Ratchet I had , 900 straight ,22.5 inches long

This means little to nothing but both of my RimX in McMillan stocks do their best work at 45 in/lbs. I have never asked anyone what they run and would guess every combo is different but I was surprised to see your post call out 45. I personally was more surprised, like you may find, how much changing the torque setting had an effect on my target.

Yes ! I shot very first group at fifty and dialed scope to 100 yards , shot first group at 60inch pounds with SK Long Range match first shot did not even hit 1" target and shot high and right then next 4 chewed out center of target dot every group after was vertical stringing . I had torque wrench and so I wanted try since there was very little wind went to 50 first and groups got smaller , went 45 and even smaller . decided to try 5 Center X only had 10 left in box and had already moved scope setting down and was running out of targets . shot that little group and my buddy was looking through his spotting scope at target and said you better go take a pic of the group, I just brought target home . lol

With a factory H&R12 I’m down to 20, bedded no pillars. I just don’t pick it up by the barrel and check it often.

I found 35" at the front action screw and 15" at the rear to work well. the rear action screw set up is a poor design.
For a BR build I put in a 1/4-20 screw about a 1/2" back from the factory screw hole. but this was with an aftermarket stock. both are at 45" now.

FWIW Jerry says he uses 40-45 in lbs on action screws
Remember, Jerry is probably fairly unique in regards to this. I suspect the majority of RFBR rifles live around 30 in. I‘ve said this before, bears repeating, one of the all time best RFBR smiths to ever build, did not even use a torque wrench, simply tightened until they stopped, never had an issue with proper bedding. 60 in lbs is far too high and if you see a lot of variance in you groups with different settings, you likely have bedding issues.
Any time I see “ tests” like this…….unless they’re repeated several times, my first question always…..how do you know it’s not more condition than anything else?

That's why I started with FWIW

Also FWIW, in regards to the 2500X I believe Jerry also said "never less than 40". I've been using 42 just for consistency sake. Gun seems to be shooting well. So that's what I've stuck with. As you mention I'm pretty sure it would shoot well at 30 in lbs. I don't think I'm hurting anything at 42.

I've tried "torque tuning" with other rifles and never had repeatable results with it. So I usually just choose a number and stick with it. I agree that, if the guns' properly pillar bedded, using the torque wrench is unecessary. I just like to use it for consistency as I mentioned

Yep, you are probably right. I pay attention to Pedro S as well, who’s on record as stating not critical with proper bedding, though 60 inl lbs seems way over whats needed.
I’ve always gone with 30 in lbs but up to low 40’s….cannot imagine a difference,.
Some factory, non bedded……YMMV but all I own are bedded/ pillared customs.

With a Boyd stock on my AT-One, and no pillars, I'm afraid to go that high with screw torque.
Nice shooting !
I put a 455 in a Boyd's TactiCool stock, installed bronze pillars (the only thing that I could find suitable in the moment), a 20" CZ bull barrel, run the front screw at 45 and rear screw at 35. It'll shoot in the 2s and 3s if I do my part and out shoots my 457 At One and my 457 Pro Varmint.
