I went the sorting route years ago. It was an exercise in frustration without perceptible benefit. Maybe I was just a lousy shooter in those days, but I eventually abandoned the foolery. Now I just buy whatever high dollar stuff that my rifles choose. Prices kind of grate on me when my head goes back childhood plinking with cheap ammo and cheap guns. I regain my senses when I consider high dollar 22LR is still cheaper than the Berger bullets I load for centerfire. It's merely a perception thing. And most shooters are cheap, errr.... "frugal."

Because CCI SV's were just ok, I thought I'd try the Green Tag and thought they'd perform along the level of Center-X or better; thinking that high price suggests higher levels of quality control. I was super disappointed, as it actually did worse than any of the SV's I ever used. Because of the high price, I felt like I was ripped off. I still have 200 rounds of the brick of GT's I bought and can't bring myself to use them. . . except for maybe some day plinking with them like I would for Federal AutoMatch.

You may already know this but green tag is sv ammo. When testing lots of sv at the CCI plant in Lewiston Idaho lots that are more consistent goes in the green tag boxes the rest into sv boxes, it all comes off the same machines at the same time, just some are better than other in your case apparently not. My 22’s that shoot sv ok usually shoots green tag some better. The ones that don’t like sv don’t shoot green tag good either. I was an electrician there from 08-15 and was able to amass quite a bit of both. Lately for cheaper ammo I’ve had much better luck with tac-22

I bet this is a beautiful rifle!… I recently bought a 1886 miruku and the fit and finish is better than any original I’ve ever seen. I would love to see a picture of you 85

The results I expect / need from my factory rifles in BR just are not there with CCI SV. I also have never had acceptable results from any Norma. Eley Target shows promise, but I got a real surprise from SK Rifle match at 50 yards in very mild conditions. It is my go to amo for this CA Ranger.

The quality control of CCI vs has gotten bad like everything else.... Simply running a box across a crono will show how bad it really is.... I ran twenty shots across a lab radar and ended up with an SD of 115.... My friend ran a box across his new Garmin with the same results... We have switched to Norma tac 22 for plinking fun because it's numbers across a crono rival some ammo that cost double.... I recently ordered a brick of SK standered plus and on paper it was hard to beat.... The SK match is slightly better for a few bucks more... I have tried the Norma match but in my opinion the SK standered was as good or better....

Unfortunately rimfire is extremely sensitive to ammo... This means even the same ammo but a different lot number out of your rifle can produce horrible results.... Honestly I wasn't impressed with CCI green tag out of my rifle.... It takes tons of testing with a rimfire , find an ammo that shoots well out of it and try and get the same lot number.... I am shooting a Ruger precision rimfire and the barrel is absolutely a POS... It shoots ok but a barrel change is in its future.... I enjoy shooting it 200-300 at steel... I bought it then realized I should have picked up a tikka tx1 or cz457 but to late now.... Pick up a brick of SK standered plus and give it a try I don't think you will be disappointed....

There is s a reason serious competition guys shoot lapua rimfire ammo but I just don't want to spend that much to play around by myself.... You can get eley from killo shooting sports shipped very fast btw right to your door at fair prices.... Normally at my door within 48 hours sometimes 24.... And packing is very nice... Now all that said also pickup a good cleaning rod , a possum hollow bore guide and some boretech c4 carbon remover and I also like their rimfire blend.... Try and keep the carbon ring removed.... Welcome to the world of rimfire I hope you have plenty of hair , I pulled all mine out in the first year of rimfire... So to recap , ammo is the game changer for rimfire and don't pull your hair out trying to find the correct one...

I also really like the SK match but I finally got a brick of the SK standered plus and was shocked with it also and it's about 3 bucks a box cheaper.... Especially good for practice and the wax is the same as the match ammo so swapping back in fourth isn't a terrible process...

I have never tried it. I have 3+ bricks of SK Rifle Match and when I can find a box I may give it a try.

My original intention was to just increase my trigger time with decent and inexpensive ammo, alibiing extreme flyers, for scoring purposes. So much for that philosophy, I discovered I don't like accepting flyers. Rabbit hole, here I come.

Yes unfortunately rabbit hole factor is there but you can keep it down to a small one by understanding the limits of rimfire... You can spend tons of money to get slight increased performance.... I wanted to shoot long distance rimfire for fun after going to a rimfire match , winning it with an out of the box Ruger precision and then listening to the complaining because my rifle looked different and that of course must be why I beat them... Not the 5000-10000 rounds a year I shoot and fifty years of doing it.... Have fun with it... I bought rimfire steel swinger targets for 100 , 200 and 300 yards and have more fun and it's more challenging... You don't need a $5000 rifle and $35 a box ammo to do it and have fun... I promise you your wind reading and every other skill needed for rifle will greatly improve...

Rsadams, please share information on where to purchase the rimfire swingers at. We have 325 yards to the berm and we have started shooting more 22rf than anything anymore. Thank

TLDR - yes I see random wild flyers with SV.

I was shooting my Kimber 82g with iron sights at 100 yards last weekend. I was testing Wolf Match Extra, Wolf Match Target, SK Std. And CCI SV. Small sample size 5-10 shot groups. All shot 1.5-2” groups with some vertical stringing. I have more of the SV so I did a check of stock torque using the SV.
SV shot 1.25” five shot at 20 in/lb torque so I zeroed that and shot a mini Palma target. I did not take a photo of the target but I took 15 shots. 7x, 4 10, two nines just up out of the group that I called up …… and two 5’s at 3:00 ….. way out of group and way off call and no way I missed that much of a wind pick up on the two flags I had set out.

As you can see from this photo of a fresh target, the flyers were 3 1/2 inches out of the center where the rest of the group was to be in the 5 ring.

Good plinking ammo. That’s about it. Sometimes you get a good batch, other times it’s mediocre.

I missed my first fly yesterday shooting my Tikka T1X. Going to "paint" some honey on the target next 22 range session and try again. I may have discovered a new shooting discipline, "fly hunting".

The most important advantage for me in starting up 22 rimfire rifle shooting again after a long hiatus is that it's another way to get out of the house and go to the range and have some fun without breaking my budget. Still, it's more fun putting all those shot within in the bull but for financial reasons, I going to accept an occasional flyer with the affordable CCI ammo.

.22 is plenty of gun to take em down with, will kill pretty much any insect in North America!

Follow up to my earlier post regarding SV flyers. I re- worked the front sight on my Kimber to get a better diopter on the front. To do that, I added a Medesha bloop tube. After seeing the flyers with CCI SV, I did some more testing with SK std and Norma Match. Both grouped just over an inch at 100 yards with the previous sight set up. Norma was a rounder group so I have been using that.
First group at 100 with new front sight and Norma match. Slight left to right wind and first two shots were at 3:00. Came 1/2 left and finished the string on the MR-31 Highpower target for 100 yard slow prone with this 7x clean. 1:00 ten was on call. Norma Match works well for this set up.
