CCI BR4 primers 60% failed

They got wet
I have shot BR-4 primers for years, many different lots, never had a problem.

If a rifle fails go no-go test it can still be within SAAMI spec.

Does anyone have the dimensions for go no-go gauges. If the rifle passes go no-go gauges what’s the maximum possible space between the case and shoulder clearance? All gunsmiths are not equal. Do small gunsmith shops even have 50-100 go no-go guages at about $130 a set. Do they guess?

I am not a Gunsmith, dont want to be a Gunsmith, I leave it to the experts.
I dont know what you are trying to determine, headspace?
I can tell you that the Smith's that I deal with dont even own " go no go gauges". They base there machining/dimensions upon the requirements for each individual firearm and their real world experience. I have never seen or heard them reference SAAMI specifications.
Good luck

I think I have a reasonable understanding of head space. I am just wondering if it's possible that after installing the barrel with gauges some weird stack up of tolerances could cause the primer or case to be pushed forward from firing pin strike. The receiver, firing pin, firing pin spring worked fine the problem started with a new barrel screwed on. The OP said the barrel was installed with gauges, does the OP trust the gunsmith that he is trurhfull? The only thing that makes sense is that for some reason a good firing pin and spring are not putting enough energy into the primer. The only reasonable cause of this is the case or primer is being pushed forward on FP strike. Kelbly chambers my barrels. No problems.

Yes the Christmas break is over but I had a wedding to attend over the weekend in Texas. I’ll be back at it this week and will hopefully get some answers.

Measured headspace again with gages and with plunger removed just to double check and it was still good. I did have some luck jamming some bullets with the new brass and 9/10 of those fired. I’m thinking the brass may have just been a little short and that coupled with the hard primer cups added up to the miss fires. On a positive note the gun shoots great and I’m hitting at 1000 yds. Thanks for all of the help on here, this place is great when you find yourself lost at the bench not knowing what to do.

First trip to the range with my re barreled rifle and I had 60% of my primers fail. Rifle is a Remington 700 with a criterion remage barrel in 6mm creedmoor. Primer depth was good on all cases and primer strikes were strong. Any ideas on the problem other than a really bad batch of expensive primers?

I had the same thing happen with BR4 primers. When I switched to #400 primers, I didn't have one fail on me. I contacted the company and they did everything but accuse me of not knowing what I was doing. I trashed the remainder and switched to Fed. Premium Match. Haven't looked back since.

For odd ball caliber one off jobs there are of couple of places that rent gages.
4D Reamer Rental being one of them

I never had a problem with primers . A friend of mine bought a CZ in 223 a beautiful bench rest rifle , then after shooting it every week for 6 months he started having fail to fire , the firing pin strike looked fine . I asked did you change anything , in cleaning his bolt assembly he didn't screw in the bolt shroud 1/4 turn more . On a CZ you can do that . Same as a weak spring .

Same thing happened to me...I changed my mainspring and that did the trick. I went from a 24lb factory weight to a 28lb. I didn't notice any difference at all.
