case lube use, types/brands, clean up

I have been using rcbs case lube all of my reloading life and I hate the stuff.

My question is this; what lubes do you guys use/find the best? And how do you clean the brass after sizing? Trip through the tumbler or a bath in the sink?

on my short type cases 223,308 ,6.5x47 I use hornady 1 shot...my long stuff 7stw i like the forester lube..both clean off with just a old tee-shirt etc...~Danny

When loading at the range or loading my PPCs I use Sizing Die Wax and wipe it off with a shop rag or t-shirt. But for loading at home, Hornady One Shot and no wiping. As long as you give it a few minutes, it's not sticky or wet.

I use the Frankford Arsenal spray pump lube. I lay the cases out in a VCR box, spray them and then shake to distribute. I stand them up on a paper towel and let them sit for about a minute. I wipe each piece with a paper towel to clean & inspect them after sizing and then tumble in corn cob to remove any lube that may have made it's way in to the neck.

I had a case stick in a die after using One Shot. I've totally moved away from it. The FA stuff works great. Cheap too. You can pick it up at midway.

I use Imperial sizing wax and am satisfied with it. But a friend and long time reloader recommended using mink oil wax leather conditioner. Gave it a try and haven't seen any difference in it and the Imperial, except cost, about 8 times as much of the mink oil wax for the same price as the Imperial. They both clean up the same.

Went from Imperial to Ballistol and loving it.

Less greasy so cleans off easier plus it's a great case cleaner. Spray some in a a baggie and after shooting put your brass in it and on the drive home from the range it is working so when you get home you can just wipe them off with a quick twist in a paper towel which leaves it pretty clean and already lubed and ready to resize and this saves the extra step of having to tumble before sizing. The Ballistol loosens the dirt so well that 10 minutes tumbling in SS media will have it shining again.

RCBS Case Lube II is completely different from the old lanolin lube. It wipes off completely with a wet rag.

Imperial Sizing Die Wax the last 20+ years.
Wipes off w/ a paper towel.

Redding Sizing Die Wax if the newbies are looking!!

Another vote for RCBS Case Lube II. It's water based, wipes off easily with a rag or paper towel, and lubes better than Imperial Wax.

I used the Hornady Unique Case Lube (it's wax). Works very well. I used a little denatured alcohol on a rag to wipe off the excess after sizing.

Guess I am the only one in my neck of the "woods" who uses Lee lube. Imperial Wax is also real good. I avoid the One Shot.

Hi Everyone
When I got started in this activity,so glad I did too,I had nothing but Lee 's lube(came with the kit);I read in Richard Lee's manual(pretty good and funny in my opinion btw, well documented if partial and Lee oriented)that they made a deal with a company specialising in car wax(the best in the indutry as Mr Lee claims..)to get provided with it as a cartridge lube(water soluble, very economical & efficient,so I thought when I began using it);then I started evolving towards other skies(RCBS dies,Forster,RCBS N°2 lube-given by a friend),I sort of changed my mind from "Lee exclusive freak" to "why not try something else might do me good",especially since I got involved with you gentlemen and this fabulous forum(but how costly it turns out);so to make it short(funny I say this)when I got my Forster Ultradie set,I tried using the full sizer on a 7x64 case lubed with Lee's stuff and it didn't work,I thought I was gonna end up with a stuck case in the brand new die;I wiped the case and relubed it with RCBS 2 lube and wow,the case got swallowed deep throat by the die, just like a charm...I had also noticed before that the Lee lube(water soluble remember)tends to rust the inside of your dies if you don't clean and oil them after use, they don't mention this issue on the tube nor in the manual.I suppose RCBS 2(water soluble too)does the same thing without it beeing advertised just the same,so there's no miracle recipe apparently, try various stuff and see,and make sure you clean your dies after use, especially if you have Redding's.Maybe Johnson furniture wax might do,I'll give it a go one day,at least it won't rut the die's innards...Take care gentlemen,Hi Wayne still out there I see mate!

I use Hornady's One Shot, it's easy to use, easy to clean, and I've never had a stuck case but some attention to detail is needed.

First, use a lube rack (available at Sinclair) that stands the cases upright exposing the entire diameter of the case.

Second, spray one side, rotate 180 degress and spray the other side making sure that you hold the spray can high enough to cover the inside of the necks.

Third, turn the die upside down and stray the inside.

Fourth, Let everything stand for a minute or so then size.

Last, wipe the case with a paper towel of clean rag.

On the heavy stuff such as belted mags Imperial only, wiped off or usually soaked in alcohol. On the small stuff Sharp Shoot R in my shake bag, ALWAYS soaked in alcohol, I had occasional dead primers and poor extreme spreads before I figured out the wiping them off was leaving stuff inside with the sprays. I have tried Hornady, Dillon, Lyman etc. . . all worked ok in the sprays on the small stuff, Sharp Shoot R is slicker and smells great (chicks dig it).

Bag Balm...get it at the local Farm and Fleet. 8$ lasts a lifetime. The lanolin (hydrogenized) is slicker than cat snot on a brass doorknob.
